Press Statement By Retired Major General Gissimalla Aldallah Rassas, Former President of the High Executive Council for Southern Sudan and Chairman of the Prospective Kenana Meeting of South Sudanese Political Leaders and Intellectuals,

1st -3rd April 2009:

A community of South Sudanese Political Party Leaders and Intellectuals will meet at Kenana Sugar Industrial Complex, during the period of 1st – 3rd April 2009, to discuss:

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) indictment of the serving President of our country, Field Marshall Omer Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir, over the civil strife in Darfur;

to review the political, administrative and security situation in South Sudan, more than four years into the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA);

to discuss the impending general elections all over the country, as provided for by the CPA and the National Constitution– will these elections take place on time, if not, what are the political, the legal and the constitutional implications of this?; if the elections take place, will they be free and fair in South Sudan, given the physical administrative and security situation prevailing in South Sudan today?; and
