Kenana forum of Southern leaders slams record of SPLM rule

April 5, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – A group of some 64 southern Sudanese political leaders and figures meeting in the Kenana Sugar Industrial Complex took a national unity stand and slammed the ruling party of Southern Sudan, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), for governance failures over the last four years.

Dissenting from SPLM over a variety of issues, the Southern political leaders, elders and intellectuals met April 1 to 3 in Kenana, on the eastern bank of the White Nile, 250km south of Sudan’s capital, to review the political situation in the south.

“The Kenana meeting does not see how the SPLM, can distance themselves, or South Sudan, which remains part of a united Sudan, from a national unity stand, adopted by the Sudanese parties and public,” stated the Secretariat of the Kenana Meeting.

Partly a reference to the ambiguous position of the SPLM on the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court, the criticism on national unity also points to deeper divisions within southern political circles over the questions of how to exercise the South’s national power and how to approach the question of the referendum on independence in 2011.

Chaired by Gissimalla Aldallah Rassas, Former President of the High Executive Council for Southern Sudan, the meeting was also attended by Presidential Advisor Bona Malwal, former Foreign Minister Lam Akol, among others.

In a final statement issued from the meeting on Friday, the leaders said they had discussed “the continuously deteriorating administrative, security and political situation in Southern Sudan, since the South gained its overwhelming self-government, under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), of 9 January, 2005.”

The meeting voiced deep resentment at SPLM for not listening or consulting with those outside of the movement. “If the SPLM has any programme of government in South Sudan, then only the SPLM agenda alone is being implemented,” stated the Kenana Secretariat.

Yet the group indicated it is committed to dialogue with the leadership of the SPLM party and admitted categorically “that the SPLM, as a movement, particularly the SPLA, as the liberation army of South Sudan, deserve the privilege and the honour accorded them by the CPA, to lead the South during the interim period.”

“It is our considered collective judgment at Kenana that both the SPLM, as the ruling political movement of South Sudan and the SPLA, as its armed military wing, have not accorded the people of South Sudan, the good governance and good leadership guidance the people deserve for their future,” elaborated the statement.

“The SPLM/A can not break the communities of South Sudan into submission to them, due to fear only. The people of South Sudan will follow and support a government that offers them physical security, the rule of law and good services as well and not a government that only brutalises them, as the SPLM has shown over the last four years.”

A committee of the Kenana meeting has been set up to present a dossier of grievances and recommendations to the President of GOSS Salva Kiir Mayardit. It is formed by the Kenana Meeting Chairman, Gissimalla Rassas; National Assembly MP Angelo Beda, who was formerly the governor of Greater Equatoria; Minister of State for Environment and Physical Planning Teresa Siricio Iro; and El Sheikh Pech Akour, representing Greater Upper Nile.

Why did they hold this meeting at this time when the President is marked for arrest on war rimes charges?

What did the meeting NOT discuss?

The meeting failed to voice deep resentment at NCP for not listening or consulting with those outside of the movement.

The meeting failed to consider if “ the NCP, as the ruling political movement of North Sudan and the PDF, as its armed military wing, have accorded the people of South Sudan, the good governance and good leadership guidance the people deserve for their future,”.

“The NCP can not break the communities of South Sudan into submission to them, due to fear only. The people of South Sudan will follow and support a government that offers them physical security, the rule of law and good services as well and not a government that only brutalises them.”

G 64 of South Sudan Politicians, i personally agree with them in One point, that is Security situation in Southern Sudan, because Guys, facts can be spoken, SplmSpla Government failed in Internal Security Management, i disagree with them in their hidden Agenda, as par as Names mentioned indicate, most of those Politicians are NCP Members, Splam Member kicked out and South Sudanese Muslim Politicians, London Group etc, so in this case there is jealousy or this could lead to Opposition Group in Southern Sudan, so Guys, those People should go down, sit with those in Rule and iron out every differences. Good that they have Final Statement to be send to Goss under SPLASPLM Control.

What are these selfish greedy saying? Useless leaders from fragmented parties! Becasue of selfish ambitions, these so called leaders are are just enjoying singing their master’s song at kenana. They are a very weak opposition parties that cannot shake SPLM.

How do you expect SPLM/A to give full security when you are advising the arabs in the north to cause confusion in the south?

Remain where you but your since will one day be visited on your children. Do not think you will continue to betray and you will walk away with it. At least one day, your children if not you will pay for your sins.

Shame on you leaders whom bashir have long kept on life support. You are really of no value to the south because if you cannot contribute in the south during this time of need then we feel that you have betrayed us. Just continue with your selfish motives but we are still living remember we are still youth but at our time, we shall ensure that if you still lived by then, you will have to answer for your sins no matter your age. We know you very well.

The so call Kenana Forum of southern Sudanese political leaders, elders and intellectuals is a deformed group of politicians who lost their creditability in the south, they were created to be puppet leaders for the NCP agenda and advance its ill policies, some of them were sent to many African countries in hope to deferral the indictment of their “naked King “. Because of their kind, Sudanese in general and Darfurians in particular are suffering more. The failure of this leaders to issue a political statement under their parties names is a clear prove that they are not legitimate representatives to their constituencies, otherwise they should rally their base to come out and demonstrate for al – Bashier’s support. Shame on them, this dean’s list of corruptive politicians lake political teeth and they will perish politically with Bashier soon. The stand of the SPLM in support of the Darfurians and the international justice is honorable. Bashier has failed his duty as a president of all Sudanese, he armed Arab tribes against non-Arab, he offered air force support for Arab militia against Darfurians, he failed to bring those who committed atrocities in Darfur to justice, he failed to return the Darfur’s IDPs to their occupied land by Arab tribes, he has been impeding for so long the AU, the UN efforts to bring peace and easy the suffering of the IDPs. Why than the so called southern politicians don’t want Bashier to face justice? The group of the Mayists of Nimary, Salvationists of Omer must stop interfering with people’s business before is too late.

stop blaming the SPLM many of you were in the government. What did you do?.Nothing, others like Abdalla Rasa who stole
money put in a coffin confisticated at Mundri destined to Bhar El Ghazal, will you do any better this time around.

The SPLM as done enough the best can do is to advice the Splm through your party in an election that is coming. If your party wins in the south then you will put your plan in place to bring new ideas for development. Yes, it is two years away to referendum. Get the south out of the bondage and develop the south. It is nota matter of opposition for political advantage by trying to destroy the SPLM while hiding in the North. There is no eating using the blood of innocent southerners for the benefit of the few hungry and blood thirsty dirty politics.Use the ballot box that is the best weapon.
