Sudan census results to be released in two weeks: report

April 12, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan will announce the result of the fifth census in a couple of weeks, according to a newspaper report.

The London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat quoting unnamed officials said that the assessment report of the census will be submitted to the Statistics Bureau and then to the Sudanese presidency.

Results will be announced shortly afterwards, the officials said.

The fifth Sudan Population and Housing Census, a milestone in the implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was conducted from 22nd to 30th April 2008. It was the first all inclusive census for people of southern Sudan since the country’s independence in January 1956.

The census will help decide how wealth and power are ought to be shared in Sudan.

Yesterday the census monitoring and follow up committee chairman Dr. Abdel-Bagi Al-Gailani said that monitors from over 20 countries observed the process and vouched for its integrity.

He pointed out that the enumeration operations had been successfully conducted in Darfur camps and southern Sudan despite the multiple hindrances.

The Al-Sharq Al-Awsat referencing some news reports in Sudan said that the population in Darfur was estimated to be 8 million compared to 7 million in the South.

The newspaper said a confrontation may erupt between the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) if Southerners are showed to account for less than 25% of the population.

The SPLM which heads the semi autonomous South government reluctantly accepted the commencement of the census after posing objections to questions on race and religion in the forms used.

Afterwards SPLM officials said that they will not accept any census results that they consider lowering South Sudan population.

This week the SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum disclosed that “discrepancies” are behind the delay in releasing the census outcome.

Amum said that “the results may be questionable and we do not know whether it would be valid ground for the upcoming general elections”.

“Probably without the census results we could rely on former statistics such as the 1956 census” he added.

The Sudanese government has missed several deadlines it set for releasing the census results, drawing speculations on the reasons behind the delay.

This is not valid census. A census that left behind other regions and many people who are living outside of the towns. You may call it census, but not valid. Go for it and announce it to yourself. You may not leave darfur, a part of Sudan, and announced that you have done a wonderful job.

Sudan should be careful in announcing the census, otherwise there areas like , Nuba mountains, Blue Nile and Abyei. there must be consideration in those areas as you know Nuba mountains did experiances diffuculties in caring out census last time.Failure to do that, there will be zero election next year espeacially in those contested areas.

The census in the south was done by Southerners, remember when you people complained and nagged that the North was spying by sending some of its people to monitor the census. Stop your bitter nagging like old women and babies.

‘We wont accept the results unless we like it’ !! What kind of professional talk is that for a government figure Secretary General Pagan Amum? esp one that his party claims is democratic and fair.

Its obvious the greedy SPLM, just wants wealth and power. Its has gotten use to the millions of dollars poured in from the oil and wants to stay in their comfortable seats without working for it. For gods sake earn the respect of the people, dont just rely on your primitive tribal base that wont help you when the cards fall down.
