Bari, Mundari groups reportedly clashed north of S. Sudan capital

April 27, 2009 (LONDON) – There are reports of fighting between the Bari Community and Mundari Community north of Juba around Jebel Ladu, according to the leader of an organization pressing for reform within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

The Bari are a small ethnic group living along the Nile river, and the Mundari — which is the ethnicity of Central Equatoria Governor Clement Wani Konga — border them to the north. The two groups speak the same language.

Charles Kisanga, chairman of the SPLM Patriotic Organisation, said that the exchange of gunfire has even involved heavy artillery.

Reportedly some SPLA officers and soldiers, including former militia integrated into SPLA, have split along community lines and are hurrying to the north of Juba to secretly take part in the fighting. Up to Monday morning there was no report yet on casualties from both sides.

According to a report indirectly linked to an eyewitness who fled the scene of the fighting, Mundari cattle raiders are using heavy weapons in fighting the Bari and the fighting seemed to have broken out due to cattle rustling which got out of hand.

“Some people told our source that some security agents of SPLA tried to intervene yesterday as they were seen in three vehicles and heading to the scene of the fighting but they returned later to Juba without intervening claiming that both side were using heavy fire and shooting randomly preventing then from getting close to the middle of the fighting and separate them,” stated Kisanga, who also leads an international organization for the Azande people of Western Equatoria.

SPLM Patriotic organisation sources in Juba say there has been no word from Southern Sudan’s military on how they could contain the fighting. Likewise, the UN peacekeepers and diplomatic missions are also silent, perhaps because the Government of Southern Sudan has yet to acknowledge the fighting.

Most Bari rural inhabitant who are staying around Jebel Ladu are reported to have fled the scene to Kwarejik, a village some kilometres north of Juba international airport. One man who spoke on condition of anonymity said that he saw a group of young men loading AK47 machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades into a pickup Land Cruiser to head for the area of the fighting.

“SPLM Patriotic Origination condemns the fighting as a good example that the International Community is wasting time focusing their energy about only preserving the CPA between North and South and caring less about the tribalism, corruption and ethnic strife now destroying South Sudan. It will be of no use to hold elections for the purpose of appeasing the North while South Sudan will become failed region with no peace, no security, no justice and no development,” said Kisanga.

The London-based leader further insinuated that members of the international community have only Sudan’s oil in mind rather than the true democratic transformation of Sudan. Kisanga was formerly a member of the SPLM National Liberation Council.

South Sudan, the doom state, proud of nothing right now, waiting for possible ethnic war.

The head of state Mr.Salva Kiir has never blamed any such kind of actions perpatuated by civilians, the president continue silence while the ethnic confrontation is soaring.
It would be no reason for South Sudanese to vote for separation while the war is waiting for them on their backyards.
I am confident that South Sudan will get self determination with possible war after independence if this situation persist.
Is shame on Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, shame, shame, shame on both of you guys, stop this hell, say some thing about this bloody conflict between our ethnicities.
177 killed last week in Jonglei, other dozens killed in Warrape, again in Equateria, tomorrow it will happen some where with in the country, then what a hell you are waiting for? We the people of South Sudan are sick of such bloody news, we regret to have government of South Sudan who is disguising of doing enough for people.
I urge citizens of South Sudan to rally against Riek Machar and his president Salva Kiir to stop silence while the war between civilian is outraging. Please do it, do it, its beyond our indurance, we can’t tolerate this situation any more, stand up and fight Salva and Riek.

    No thank,

The silence of the GoSS government on such fatal incidents, is just unimaginable. Because every day the same shit keeps happening, but at a different address. Our leaders should not just sit with their hands under their asses and whatch while southerners are killing, abducting and raping each other like wild animals.

There is no excuse, none whatsoever, for GoSS not to use its power – in its capacity as government to end all barbaric voilence in the south.

The SPLM/A and GoSS should really start to deliver on critical issues like security, transparancy and accountability as the people are sick and tired of all the corruption, nepotism and tribalism practised on all levels by our so called “leaders” in government today.

Elections are coming up soon, so politicians and parties should know that, what they do today (those in GoSS) will determine their future as leaders tommorro.

    Please “wise up” my people.

    Lo Juba.

Infact what is going in south sudan these days is a very dangerous sign of possible war in diffrent forms after separation. I don’t think none of the southerners will vote for separation if the separation will be the ways to many funerals in the south. It is time for tribalists to think twic about reconciliation among our communities.Even those who are spoiling websites with their sick comments will meet the same fate directly or indirectly if they don’t encourage reconciliation. we have already prove to the world that Arabs are right when they says southerners are not capable to rule themselves. Let us please focus on education, health and development as the means of solving our chronic poverty and diseases. Tribalism is not a solution. Leaders can not solve this without your cooporation.
