Sudan officially endorses census results
May 6, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese presidency officially approved the results if the fifth census conducted a year ago.
In a meeting that took place today Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir. First Vice President Salva Kiir and 2nd Vice President Ali Osman Taha, they reviewed the report submitted last month.
They also listened to a briefing from the national council for the fifth census committee and from number of international monitors who observed the process.
Sudan official news agency did not reveal the figures in the results but last month the Al-Sahafa independent newspaper quoting “reliable sources” said that the population of Khartoum topped 5 million; Darfur 7.5 million and South Sudan 8.2 million.
The results for South Sudan fall short of Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) desired number representing the third of the population.
The London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily said that SPLM chairman Salva Kiir held a high level meeting on Tuesday night with the executive bureau to discuss the results.
The Sudanese presidency instructed that the results be analyzed by technical groups for economic and social indicators to be utilized for the planning process, SUNA reported.
The head of the Southern Sudan Commission for Census, Statistics and Evaluation Isaiah Chol told reporters in Juba that central bureau of statistics violated agreements announcing the results of 39 million last month.
He also expressed surprise regarding the increase in the population of Darfur since the 1993 census. He also complained that the numbers of Southerners in the North turned out less than expected.
Chol said that the Southern commission did not get the chance to document the information on the North due to lack of cooperation with the central office.
In late April Chol expressed satisfaction with the census process saying it was “professional and credible”.
It remains to be seen whether the SPLM as a political movement would accept the results or ask for changes as some Southern official have suggested.
The SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum has said that the South will boycott the upcoming 2010 elections if they decide that the census outcome is unacceptable.
He also said that the results could be adjusted based on the 1956 census.
The SPLM which heads the semi autonomous South government reluctantly accepted the commencement of the census after posing objections to questions on race and religion in the forms used.

Dear Southerners,
We should not be blind-fooled in a day light as though we don’t have folks mandated to carrry the same exercise. 39 million announcement was a result given out by “Jalaba” and even the 8.2 was as well announced by the same representative. So far if southerners were part-takers in this censusship, what is their estimated number of Southerners that they have gotten so far? Rather than to say, the main office in the North was not cooparative in making a smooth exercise can not really convincing few if not all of us. How about in the South sector, how many folks do we have so far before pointing figure where mirage seem to be taking a dramatic changes?
It’s true that we have been manipulated by the northern sector in accordance to this very result. It just beat the logic. Ops! in the presence of South leader Mr. kiir, what was his comment in reaction to what he has already knows? Was he not the same person that said sometime that such result are not accepted? If this a realm projection of our Southern leadership, then we are leading to the doom. If Amum as seen by his brave defension of the “Junuub” on daily basis against the northern regime, Is it hard for the Southern legislature to replace our meek leader with someone who is sharp to enough to face northern dagger without retreat?
We should not let our Southern pride be undermined under the leadership of lame-duck bulldozzers.
