SPLM questions national census results

May 7, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The main partner in the national unity government and ruling party in southern Sudan said today that Salva Kiir Mayadrit had some reservations about the national census.

After several months of absence from the Sudanese capital, the First Vice President arrived Wednesday to Khartoum where he held a meeting with the President Omer Al-Bashir and Vice President Ali Osman Taha.

The official Suna reported that the meeting of the Sudanese presidency endorsed the results of the fifth national census, which SPLM seemed to have opposed saying southern Sudanese should be more heavily represented than what is counted.

On Thursday SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum said that Kiir had reservations about the result, which “were doubtful in their integrity”.

Press reported that southerners are at 8.2 million according to the census results. Under the terms of the peace deal, any proof the south had less than a third of Sudan’s total population would lead to a recalculation of how much of the country’s oil revenues flow to the region’s capital, Juba.

“The census stated that the number of southern citizens present in the north were about 240,000. The previous government’s estimates were more than 1 million people, most of whom lived in the capital,” Amum told a news conference.

“There is an unnatural increase in the number of citizens in southern Darfur. The percentage of increase in southern Darfur (in the northern part of country) compared to the last census is 90 percent,” he added. The last census was held in 1993.

Mehdi Qutbi, the National Congress Party’s head of the national secretariat of organizations, criticized the skepticism of some of SPLM leaders about the result of the fifth census endorsed by the presidency yesterday.

Qutbi said that talking about democratic transition requires the acceptance of the outcome of the census as it is, noting particularly that it had been monitored by foreign experts and conducted in accordance with international standards for censuses.

He further added if the SPLM is skeptical about the census of population, how will it accept the outcome of the elections if they fail to achieve the expected results? He stressed the need to accept technical aspects, and to not interfere in the work of the competent committees.

Shut up Mr.Amum, did you ask your children to come from Australia for the count? Mr. President at least had his children counted. You can’t be always at the negative when the glaring facts show that the census wasn’t inclusive or conducted well.

I thought the number could be less than eight million because Mr.Isaiah Chol mishandled our count; Southerners within weren’t counted included this writer who has been in Juba since. What are you talking about when we failed ourselves to do our duties professionally?

It doesn’t make any difference again now; please give a break to your relentless, futile onlaught against the NCP and do something about your own ineffective system in Juba

    Shut up

You know Am mockly laughing to the top of my lungs when I see folks like Pagan and others are trying to complain like dogs at national medias.

Who is to be blamed Khartoum government or you the theives of GOSS?

You are to be blames because census had been sheduled for this year since the signing of the CPA and you know it very well. But none of you bothered about it, everybody was busy thinking difference ways of how to steal as much money as he can from the GOSS. Now I don’t understand why should you smack? What is so new that you were not awared of?

You people have really taken the poor masses of southern Sudan back to zero. How do you think we have to get 1/3 of the population while other tribes within southernSudan were not even counted.

Because of tribalism and our inborn greeds, many people did not want other communities to get proper counting such the tribes who have been purposely reduced to become minority for the GOSS to cheat them less should not get counted and later get their real fugures and good presentation later.

That is why the tribes like Jie, Kachipo, Nyangathom and many village in Murle were not counted. I heard there were many and many subtribes and villages within Equatoria were not reached, some villages in Anyuak and Nuer were not also counted, and no body even bothered to expedite refugees repatriation from Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia to give us good figure. Again, why should we bark or growl?

For our greed, neglegence and stupidity, this is the result and we need to be happy and accept as it is. Stop wasting our eyes and hear. I am annoit like hell.

    God bless

The writer is always peace activist.
