Clashes between Bari and Mundari said to be under control

By Isaac Vuni

May 10, 2009 (JUBA) — The chairman of the Government of Southern Sudan’ s committee on Bari-Mundari conflict, Hon. Henry Danga, said rampant insecurity in and around Juba involving communities of Bari and Mundari is under control and appealed to the public not to panic.

Sporadic gunfire began Friday evening in Juba coming from so-called Jebel Dinka, a village about 12 kilometres away along the Juba-Mundri road. Residents from Munyiki could hear the exchange of the gunfire sometimes heavy and this went on to almost midnight. Three Mundari, said to be cattle rustlers, were reportedly killed by police guarding Jebel Lado on Friday night.

Bari against Mundari clashes continued Saturday morning with gunfire heard northwest of Juba at Jebel Lado. Many Bari people have been seen streaming toward Juba centre coming from the area of the clashes last night. Scores of Bari displaced were seen in Juba today especially around Munyiki area.

Nevertheless, Hon. Danga said that fighting ongoing in and around Juba is now under control by combined forces of Eastern Equatoria state police and Sudan People’s Liberation Army, speaking during a conference with journalists Saturday at Southern Sudan television premises.

The chairman emphasized that there is no need to worry as soldiers and police have taken full control of the situations as from last night, further elucidating that Bari and Mundari chiefs have agreed to talk and find out root causes dividing the communities, which have been living together for many years without fighting each other.

But Danga revealed that the persistent fighting Friday night and a phone call from the Jebel Lado youth association describing the attack by Mundari raiders from midnight until 1 am resulted in the cancellation of a meeting between the communities’ leaders.

Sources reporting to the UK-based SPLM Patriotic Organisation said that it appeared Saturday that the fighting was at Gudeli areas where heavy gunfire took place when Mundari cattle raiders apparently targeted Bari cattle in the area. The raid then moved from looting cattle to other items including property and shops.

“Reports coming from Bari sources speak of a group of Mundari raiders who attacked last night and they were now heading towards Wonduruba deep to the south of Juba towards Juba-Yei road areas. The source told me the fleeing Bari community members talk of a force of about 75 well-armed Mundari cattle raiders who were headed towards the villages south of Juba,” said Charles Kisanga, chairman SPLM Patriotic Organisation and leader of an international organization for the Azande people.

In an interview Saturday, the paramount chief of Bari communities Danish Dramalu said they are ready to reconcile their devastated communities with Mundari so that perpetrators of conflict are brought to book as the current conflict escalates in the whole area around Juba. On the other hand, the paramount chief of Mundari, Venusto Modi Wani, revealed that it was Bari youth were first to aggress against a Mundari youth whose mother comes from the Bari community. He was shot and broke his leg, presumably by Bari police, prompting a revenge attack.

Referring to an incident that started from April 21 to April 22, 2009, the Mundari paramount chief said there were 12 Mundari people killed in cold blood while the Bari paramount chief denied this allegation. The fighting began when a Mundari shot a Mundari youth whose uncle is Bari, then looted the cattle of Bari.

Chief Dramalu blamed the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) for cattle-raiding and land grabbing from Bari citizens, which he said started soon after formation of GOSS government in 2005 though the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which stipulates that land belongs to the citizens, he pointed out.

On the other hand, the paramount chief of Mundari said they are ready to reconcile with Bari communities since they had been living and marrying from each other for centuries without fighting.

Fighting is said to have affected road transport to Juba whereby the Bor road is closed, the way to Torit is not passable unless with military escort as well as Terekaka road which also is negotiable only with military escort.

Kisanga said one of his sources believes the fighting is political and thinks the Bari had been armed purposely by some SPLA and GOSS elements in order to make life difficult for Central Equatoria Governor Clement Wani, a ploy to remove him from power by pinning blame on him for failing to control the insecurity. In attacks, the Mundari raiders reportedly have been surprised that the Bari had even heavy weapons. Wani visited Jebel Lado on Saturday to assess the situation.

Bari and Mundari communities aim to hold a meeting at Nyakuroni Cultural Center on Monday.

Personal there is nothing on around, I just came through Mundari towns of Tumbara and upto here to Bari land of Juba, nothing is happening. This all evils rumours where speeded by fucking junglese who like gossip and fucking around with stupid idea. I warn Bari speaking communities not to get engage in support of either Mundari nor Bari. Those lost mad junglese are criminals who likes to see people killing themselves, let s not adopt their crazy culture of shooting people. The days for those junglese are number, because the emerged of ERM is their last time to be in Equatoria land. I advice them to begin owning farms in their homes, otherwise ERM will chase them to starve or join their masters to earn a living.

LOGIC BOY IS THE CHAIRMAN OF ERM

Manthem Jechamer, I pray that God through his redemptive ways will change your evil heart one day. Remember no body will leave to eternity but it doesn’t matter how you die. So why do you encourage an undignified death?

You are a wizard according to African culture when you dance on the grave of a person you cursed to death. What do you benefit from people killing themselves because of animals?

Of what much benefit is an animal that cannot even lower your dead body to your grave let alone digging it?
Thank God the loss of more lives has come to an end. Even ducks, pigeons when you kill any of them while the rest are seeing, they will abandon you the master. I do not see a point in you rejoicing but only see how bad -hearted you are and of no value to your community or Southern Sudan.

A fool who goes to school to study hatred and propagate it is remains a fool himself. You need these people one day in your life.

I condemn in very strong terms all ethnic clashes in Southern Sudan because we will not be justified to argue that 2 million pepole died during the 21 years of war and the Arabs caused it when we are here difficult to be differentiaited from animals after going to school.

We write these useless things but this is the era of Dotcom where children of seven years are reading our communications. Will our generation deliver compared to the present leadership if we continue to support and incite violence? Whatwill stop the seeds of genocide been planted in Southern Sudan if we continue with this attitudes based on tribal hatred and support one tribe against the other?

All of us writing to this web site are known and history will not forgive you. One day, these writings will pay us it doesn’t matter if iam in UK, US or Australia. All the tribes in Southern Sudan have the right to live and enjoy this country. The government is obliged to protect the rights of the minority groups that is why you saw an intervention from the police and the army.

You can kill all the tribes in Southern Sudan and remain, but who will you rule? What is authority without subjects? Shame on You manthem.

Thank you BLM for your good observations. God bless you.
