Sudan Airways to resume flights to Asmara

May 11, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s National carrier will resume its flight to the Eritrean capital Asmara by the end of the current month.

The first flight from Khartoum to Asmara will take place on May 24, Eritrea national Day, Sudanese deputy ambassador to Eritrea told the official SUNA.

The Sudanese diplomat, Abdel-Karim Ahmed Yousif further said relations between the two countries are witnessing significant development mentioning the opening of the joint borders and the construction of roads and trade exchanges as well as mutual visits at the official level and popular in both countries.

In an interview with the Sudan TV, President Isaias Afwerki reiterated his call for inter -Sudanese dialogue to resolve Darfur crisis and rejected external intervention in the Sudanese issues.

He further said that the East Sudan region is a bridge between Eritrea and Sudan, and that the implementation of development projects would strengthen bilateral relations and serves the interest of the populations in both countries.

Moreover, Isaias said that the Asmara Agreement that was concluded two years ago is being effectively implemented, though there are delays here and there.

On October 14, 2006, Sudanese government and East Front rebels, composed of the Beja Congress and Free Lions, signed a peace accord that was negotiated with Eritrean help and is aimed at ending a 12-year armed conflict in the eastern Sudan.
