Commissioners of Mundari and Bari appeal for ceasefire, talks

May 11, 2009 – County commissioners representing both Bari and Mundari communities endorsed a ceasefire between the two, though the Bari Community in Juba on Monday continued to boycott a reconciliation conference intended as a way to resolve weeks of heavy fighting.
Insecurity in and around Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan, has seriously worsened as Mundari raiders are allegedly looting, raping women and raiding cattle and goats of the Bari people. Scores of Bari have fled to Juba.
Commissioner Juma Ali of Terekeka County expressed concern and dismay over a letter of boycott from Bari elders and intellectuals and advised them to rethink their decision rather than rushing to the President of the Government of Southern Sudan for a solution. Before resorting to such an appeal, he said, they should sit together with the Mundari as family members of the same state to sort out what divides, then build on unity.
Earlier the Bari community had accused the reconciliation committee constituted by Governor Clement Wani Kanga of being biased, demanded the return of raided cattle and goats, fair compensation of those killed, and investigation of the governor from the time he assumed the governorship. Some demanded for Wani’s immediate removal by the president.
Despite the boycott, the reconciliation conference was opened by Stephen Lemi on behalf of the governor who was unwell. He urges all parties to refrain from attacking and killing each other.
Participants at the conference at Nyakuron Cultural centre included paramount chiefs who directed the two commissioners of Juba and Terekeka counties to visit conflict areas to ensure there is a ceasefire for them to continue talking peace and reconciliation that should resume from May 23, 2009.
A civil affairs officer of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), Anthony Agyenta said that they visited the conflict areas and advised the communities to seriously address issues that divide them. While the committee headed by Henry Danga, advisor of the local government board and former deputy governor of Central Equatoria State, is tasked with preparing the ground-work for them to iron out the details of their differences at the conference.
Already the Juba-Terekeka-Lakes roads including Juba-Torit were closed due to insecurity as from yesterday unless travelling under heavy military escort.

Mr.Vuni, i want to remind you thta the action that Mundari people have taken against Bari is not far from What Dinkas are donig on Innocent Equatorians, Dinkas continued looting our people through out the war time and right now vehicles are being short along Torit-Juba road no one even mind to expose that out even the media .
they must learn how to settle their own problems alone as a family with almost one culture although Mundari are more of Cattle keepers. I for one i don’t think Wani Konga as a Mundari has a hand in that incident. please let’s avoid pointing figers at people who might be ignorant of certain things.
the threats is those uncultured politicians who does not have any knowledge of CPA and what it means to their communities. but let’s pray hard election come and throw them out of parliament .

The boycott was justified by the Bari elders for the reasons they have given. These reconciliation conferences ever held in Juba do not offer any solution at all apart from causing economic loss to the state and GOSS as all resolutions will not be implemented.
You cannot solve problems affecting people in the villages without involving them. Why do you convene a conference without Clement Wani who is the only heart of the Mundari people who can bring peace or war if he talks to his people?
Our things are done in hurry and we want to even solve the problem when actually people are mourning, burrying and nursing wounds. Observe the ceasefire and talk peace after.
When have the mundari become so entrenched in politics that they now because of the guns want to terrorise Southern Sudan? I know that Clement Wani Konga if he is not careful, will not be in his position next term come general elections.
Today is yours, tomorrow is mine even after 1000 years. A human being will continue to defend his family even if you come with BM.
These conflicts should not be looked at from tribal perspective any more but should be given a Southern Sudan thought otherwise this so called autonomous South will fail.

People, don’t ever pay your attention to the media, what this guy is trying to present is absolutely incorrect. The activity that was done did not involve any tribal fight of Equatorians people. It is just a way of maintaining the unity and peace in Equatoria and advice on some people not to adopt junglese culture. First of all, i agree with those who demanded the removal of Governor Clement Wani, Wani is not fit to be a Governor of Central Equatoria which is the seat of South Sudan Government because Wani lack Administrative and Leadership Qualifications, he is just a mere military man unable calm serious issues either in his community or in State level. Secondly Mundari are nothing compare to Bari in term of every aspects, but we don’t take thing in that stupid way what we need is good person with unique characteristics whether from small and less educated community or the opposite. Finally Bari should not ignore or take serious step against Mundari because Mundari are less open-minded people Educationally and Culturally.
