May 16, 2009 (JUBA) — Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, chairman of the Africa Union high panel charged with handling the Darfur crisis today visited Juba, the capital of southern Sudan to explore steps taken on Darfur by the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS).

Last February the AU formed the panel in response to the anticipated ICC arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir. The commission has been tasked with looking into ways to balance accountability with bringing peace into Darfur and will submit a report to the African Union summit next July.

South Sudan’s ruling party secretary-general has said that the party has a limited role in Darfur because it is not a party to the conflict, though it is part of the Government of National Unity. The Southern leaders in the past have hosted several minor Darfur rebel factions for talks in Juba.

Mbeki is joined by three other former African heads of state on the eight-member panel, including Burundi’s Pierre Buyoya and Nigeria’s General Abu Salam Abu-Bakr.

He told journalists that the positive discussion focused on issues affecting the Darfur crisis, but did not provide details.

He was received by Dr. Riek Machar, Vice President of GOSS, Dr. Luka Tombekana Monoja, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, along with hundreds southern Sudanese at Juba’s international airport.

Mbeki was accompanied by Alhaji Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Nigerian head of state, Pierre Buyoya former Burundian head of state, Alhaji Kabir Abdulfatai former Nigerian state house counsel, Justice Florence Ndepele Mwachande Mumba of Zambia supreme court, Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi of Cameroon International Institute, Professor Salaheddine Mohmoud Fawzy Amer, member of Ethiopian National Council for Human Rights, Justice Maitre Aref Mohamed Aref, advocate of Djibuti, Professor Tiyanjana Maluwa, dean of an international school for Africa in the USA.

Ooops! This is another wasting of south, Sudan few revenues
for the falsely claimed peace process. South, Sudan has alot on it plate rightnow to handle rather than wasting of sudan, sudan oil revenues for fail peace process. The people of Darfur deserves better panel to handle the Darfur crisis. The panel of Mbeki, Riek Machar, Salva etc is the worsest panel ever to even attempt any peace process in the entire world. For example, Riek wasted South, Sudan money for almost 3yrs for failed peace negotiation of LRA, Salva himself has deterioted situation all across South sudan and he should be first alarmed by the ongoing civilians killing all across south sudan. And Mr. Mbeki of South Africa is another failed Leader, who didnot acomplished anything special the Zimbawee conflicts and his own reputation in his home country is zero. Also, Mbeki is supporter of Albashir, so that mean he is going to uses false peace process to let Bashir get advantage. The people of Darfur should not be decieved by these fail leaders, who has not acomplished anything so far in their respectives countries. In my view, peace processs should be handled by people with expertise, like John Danfort of U.S.A who help in the acomplishement of CPA. I would also support Formal UN SG Koffi annan to be the one to handle the Darfur conflicts with others expertise because people of Darfur can trust his judgement, because he has proven himself in the Kenyan conflict. But the panel of Mbeki, Riek, Salva etc is the worse to even talkes about Darfur Conflict. These are the fail Africa Leaders with very poor jugement in almost anything. Comrade Salva & Riek please do not wastes Southernese money?????????????
