Hundreds of people turn-up for SPLM anniversary in Bor

By Thon Philip Aleu

May 17, 2009 (BOR) – 26 years ago in what is today’s capital Jonglei state – Bor, a war to end marginalization, second-class citizenship and oppression in the Sudan started which culminated to what is known as the Compressive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Ayod_Commissioner.jpgJonglei tribes, hooked in tribal feuds, are yet to realize that peace has come to the region as traditional leaders struggle to set their differences aside.

Just before day break, gunshots were heard everywhere in Bor town – a sign that the struggle is continuing.

Residents in Jonglei capital marched to Bor Town Freedom Square early Saturday May 16, 2009 to mark the historical day of uprising in Southern Sudan lasting 22 years where about 2.2 millions lives were lost in the African’s longest guerilla war.

With veterans dressed in military uniform, Jonglei authorities converged with town residents in the five hours event later left by many audiences for the sun shine nearly causes shock. Holding New Sudan flag, children, organized forces and well wishes chatted songs of liberation as reminders of long civil war.

As part of the CPA, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) rules the South with the military wing as the former active fighters – the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). Southern leaders, most of them former combatants now run the affairs of the antonymous region.

But May 16 remain significant in South Sudan’s history and Bor Town in particular. Sudan’s painful road to peace, writes a Sudanese journalist Arop Madut Arop, would have not been attained and thus the shore shall have not been reached. The Southern Sudanese dream and quest for self determination set by CPA for 2011 would have remained uncertain.

Attending the celebration were Jonglei Ministers: Kengen Jakor Boya for finance, John Amuor Kuol for land and physical infrastructures, Rachael Nyadak Pau for social development and Governor’s Peace and development advisor John Jock Chol. SPLM State secretary Bouth Chuol also attended his party’s sponsored celebration.

I congratulates the people of Jonglei state for their courage to celebrates the 26th anniversary of SPLA on time. May 16th is storical events and should be declared as national holiday to be recelebrated on time every year to rememorial our struggle against Khartoum regime. The weak admistration of Salva & Riek has decided to posposed this important day. This shown how naive Salva and Riek to the Southernese struggle. I never seen national holiday be postponed for just political reason. Shame on you Salva and Riek for insulting Southernese in the face. Your adminsitration has forgotten that we are still marching in sweat and struggle. Once again, congratulation to the people of Jonglei State for their courage to celebrates this important national holiday on time.
