Sudan sentences more 9 rebels to death in Khartoum attack
May 20, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — A Sudanese special court today sentenced nine to death ten rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) for participating in an attack against the Sudanese capital where more than 220 people were killed in May10, 2008.
Today’s verdict brings to 91 the number of the rebels condemned to death.
The judges pronounced their decisions after declaring the rebel guilty under Sudanese criminal and counter-terrorism legislation of involvement in the unprecedented attack.
The issue of the detained and sentenced JEM members is the main obstacle to the Doha peace process where the Sudanese government and the rebel group had signed last February a goodwill agreement to settle the conflict peacefully.
JEM considers says Sudan has to release the sentenced rebels who are prisoners of war, as it was agreed in the agreement, before to pursue the process.
However, the parties are expected to meet on May 27 in Doha to discuss the outstanding issues. The mediation and the international partners also propose to sign a truce, a matter that JEM refuses.
The rebels accuse the government of continuing to try the detained JEM members in order to force them to sign the ceasefire agreement.
