Lou Nuer Youth Condemn the Tragic Attacks on Kony?r?k and Tork?c Civilians
May 27, 2009 — In mid-March and May 8, 2009, the Lou Nuer and Jikany had launched attacks against each other on Kony?r?k and Tork?c where innocent lives of children and women were lost. Due to these untimely deaths, the Lou Nuer Youth Association (LNYA) is hereby sending its condolences and sympathy toward all the families that have lost their loved ones. We strongly condemned the Tqrkfch incident that has claimed many lives of our brothers and sisters of which most of them are vulnerable. Therefore, our thoughts and prayers go to those who have lost their loved ones on that tragedy, and May God rest their souls in eternal life.
The people of Lou-Nuer and Jikany-Nuer are one people and they can resolve their differences peacefully. For this reason, we totally denounce these tragic incidents and we discourage it from occurring again. We’re also appealing to the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) and the two states authorities, as well as the local government to intervene and provide protection for these two communities so that this situation does not escalate further. One solution is to disarm the Southern Sudanese communities.
As sons and daughters of these communities, we’re asking both communities to restraint from revenging and retaliating against each other. Not revenging is one of the ways to stop this unfortunate death from happening any more.
We would also like to call on our neighbours to intervene and help in bringing peace and reconciliation between the Lou-Nuer and Jik[ny-Nuer communities. As a result of these tragic events, we call upon all the elders, church leaders, politicians, and the grassroots communities to come together to deliberate and find a better way on how these two communities can coexist and live peacefully in harmony. As one tribe, we need to discourage such an indiscriminate killing between our communities as well as in Southern Sudan in general.
We also appreciate the efforts of the GoSS and the Jonglei State Government for the initiatives they have taken by holding conferences in Jonglei and Bentiu to address the current insecurity in Southern Sudan. We’re fully behind the President and Jonglei State Government and we’ll do our best to make your efforts a success in bringing peace and harmony among Southerners.
As peace-loving and law-abiding citizens, the Lou-Nuer Youth call upon all other Youth organizations in Southern Sudan to adhere to peace and refrain from violence. Let us all join our hands to promote peace and unity among Southerners.
