Elections body agrees to international support for 2010 vote

May 28, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The National Elections Commission today signed a document laying the foundation for international support to the 2010 elections, which had been scheduled for 2009 as stipulated in the north-south peace deal.

It committed today to a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project document on support to elections and democratic processes.

The UN project contains an initial budget of US$68.7 million to cover support to NEC, the Political Parties Affairs Council, civic and voter education, domestic observation, media training and monitoring and vital stakeholders such as women and youth.

Outgoing UNDP Country Director Jerzy Skuratowicz signed on behalf of the agency, and State Minister Elias Nyamlell Wakoson signed on behalf of the Ministry of International Cooperation.

“In this document, one is pleased at the spirit of cooperation between the Commission and international counterparts,” remarked Chairman Alier, also commending the efforts exerted by the international community, including UNDP, in support of the implementation of the north-south peace agreement.

“The election project document is certainly one of the most important ones I have had the honor to sign in my three-year tenure as head of UNDP Sudan. This document promotes transparency, democratization, and cooperation; all what UNDP stands for,” said Skuratowicz at the signing ceremony.

UNDP stated that the project is “an important platform for building up cooperation between Sudanese parties in North and South Sudan as well as in Darfur.” The initiative also could allow closer collaboration between national and various international bodies potentially involved in the elections process, including the National Elections Commission, Ministry of International Cooperation, UN Mission in Sudan, UNDP, and the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur.

The signing ceremony took place on the final day in office of the UNDP Sudan Country Director.

Thanks and congratulation to Uncle Abel Alier Kwai and Elias Nyamlell for great initiative work they did,for election to go smoothly we need funds available at all time and at right place together. Abel Alier Has shown the green light for well and organised nature of election we shall have for the first time in Sudan and in South sudan particularly.Warning to Abel Alier and his committee, please beware of handling this funds in sudan because of nature of corrupt people in power should you attempt to trust all responsibility of this money to them then you will end up with figures only and no real cash at the end.
I am proud of you being my elder in the south you will do all to the best of your capacity for fair and just election in sudan such that we show to the world that we are people and can do like the rest of the world.
Thanks again, God almighty will help you out of all difficulties that are a head of you

Good work done Abel Alier.I think that is the way forward, but, transparency should be put in place. The right people to bring about the transparency are the media groups. The media(News papers, radio station,T.V stations etc) should take this opportunities to update its citizen on what is taking place.

may i call upon the media group to start establishing reporting station in all the counties.
