S. Sudan’s Kiir appoints five deputies to SPLA Chief of Staff

June 3, 2009 (JUBA)– Salva Kiir Mayardit, president of the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) and commander-in-chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), has appointed new deputies to the army’s Chief of General Staff.

Kiir also promoted the new deputies from the rank of Major General to the rank of Lieutenant General in a preceding presidential decree before their appointments were effected.

The five deputies appointed with effect from June 3, 2009 include Lt. General Obote Mamur, Deputy Chief of General Staff for Operations, Lt. Gen. Biar Atem Ajang, Deputy Chief of General Staff for Logistics, Lt. Gen. Pieng Deng Kuol, Deputy Chief of General Staff for Administration, Lt. Gen. George Athor Deng, Deputy Chief of General Staff for Political and Moral Orientation, and Lt. Gen. Ayuen Alier, Deputy Chief of General Staff for Training.

In a separate decree, the SPLA Commander-in-Chief also appointed Lt. Gen. Bior Ajang Dut for a long-time vacant post of Undersecretary in the Ministry for SPLA Affairs. Dut is a career soldier and the former Deputy Chief of General Staff for Logistics.
