Former Sudanese FM founds new political party

June 6, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lam Akol, today has announced that he will lead a new political party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement- Democratic Change (SPLM-DC).

Fomer minister of foreign affairs, Lam Akol
Fomer minister of foreign affairs, Lam Akol
Akol Since last March had problems with other leading members in his former party, the Sudan people’s Liberation Movement. At the time, the SPLM spokesperson, Yen Matthew declared that Akol membership will be reconsidered by the political bureau.

The former minister, has been criticized for his close relations with the National Congress Party. Akol has campaigned in favor of the Sudanese President after the issuance by the International criminal Court of an arrest warrant against him.

Akol explained the establishment of a new political party by the need to “save the SPLM from the collapse it is heading for.” He also criticized the “bankruptcy” of current leadership and its failure to implement good governance and democratic practice in Southern Sudan where the party dominates the semi-autonomous government.

“The SPLM has lost support among the masses of our people. Rightly so, because it has lost direction and failed to present a coherent programme in Government for both the South and nationally,” he said.

“There is no organizational and political work in the party. No specialized position papers on specific issues are prepared by the party and no political rallies are held regularly even in the Capital of Southern Sudan, Juba,” said Akol to justify the spilt.

He further complained that the party “has chosen confrontation rather than partnership with the National Congress Party. This behavior contravenes the CPA.”

Akol was a key figure at an assembly of southern leaders in April at Kenana, North Sudan, that slammed the dominant southern party for its “poor record of governance” since winning power over the South in 2005.

The manifesto today echoed some of those criticisms, for instance the SPLM’s ambivalent position on the arrest warrant against President Al-Bashir, which Lam Akol vehemently opposes.

“On many occasions the SPLM has been ambivalent on national issues, such as the ICC’s indictment of the President, the last attack on Gaza, the deployment of UN troops in Darfur, etc” stated Akol.

“A party that does not engage in political ideological work is a moribund party. It becomes fossilized and irrelevant. This is the direction the SPLM is heading for. Those who care for its soul must stop this downslide,” he said.

This sounds like ODM-Kenya or New Ford Kenya.Haha. Anyway goodluck with the game of “foolitic”. When politics is more about raw power and less about principles, then it lose its lustre. Lam has always done wrong things at the wrong time which belies or confirms(whichever way you look at it) the opportunist that he is.

    Hi guys

Politically, Dr. Lam Akol has right to form his political party because there is no any democratic nation that exist under one political party.

I love multi partism as that is going to bring more debate that will also help to shape our country’s political future.

It is ok to support any other party rather than his ( Lam)but yet Lam has full right like anybody else to do what he want, again this is democracy.

Former Sudanese FM founds new political party Wonderful News
    All,

First, instead of criticising the formation of a new party, we should be celebrating the fact that there is an alternative being offered. We have a culture in Sudan where everyone panders to the ruling party. This is partly due to the fact that some people feel they may benefit by pandering to the SPLM.

We should accept that there are people out there who do not neccasarily agree with the policies of the SPLM and the state of Southern Sudan at the moment. We should accept alternative view points and this is a political reality.

The SPLM has always taken its members for granted and this will be a good wake up call for them to start taking us seriously. I’m an SPLM supporter but the leadership sometimes appears to be acting in a vacuum. It is as if my membership is taken for granted, SPLM by birth and SPLM forever.

Multipartyism is healthy for an emerging democracy like Southern Sudan. Let both these parties state their position in regards to key issues like separation. The people will decide accordingly which party best meets their interests as opposed to blinding following a specific party without knowing where they are being led.

I, for one, welcomes the emergence of any political party in Southern Sudan. Calling someone a traitor is ludicrous. Everyone is allowed to have the individual view point. That is democracy is about and it will always remain that way. We need some political maturity in the South rather than worshiping the party that feeds us.

    Long live Southern Sudan.

    Mr. Thon

SPLM is not a name which belong to one particular person, it is a name that generalized all southerners include Dr. Lam please remember that, that means Lam didn’t commit any copy right violetion.

some of you need to accept education by allowing themselves to recognizing the nature of what is called democracy.

Dear Dr. Lam Akol, Did I read your statement well that you are going to lead a new party named SPLM-DC? May be yes, But I have simple question Sir, What happened to your SPLM-United that you went to Khartoum with in 1990s? If Your SPLM-United failed you to become a leader of Southern Sudan as your dream, do you think SPLM-DC will make you?

If your first party died and you rejoined the same SPLM you defected from and then after you were removed from Foreign ministry you defect again to another SPLM, And what about if that new party fail you again?

Anyway, I think you are good at looking for green pastures, opportunists and power struggler but not a leader. May be you might be a leader to other people but not generally Southern Sudan. When you make split in 1991 it was because Late Dr. John Garang was mismanaging the SPLM according to you, you came back from Bashir and the same Garang welcome you back to the same SPLM you left. When Garang Died you failed to nominate yourself in Newsite during leadership meeting so that you become leader of the SPLM managed South well, but accept to be part of administration of Salva Kiir. Again you did not form your party when you were Foreign minister which was SPLM seat, but after you are removed you decided to form new party. Well if forming parties and leave them along streets like SPLM-United make you leader ok try, but what happened with SPLM-united already make you failing leader, leader without principles, leader without vision to achieved, leader without objectives, but selflish leader.

Anyway people of your reading can follow you so that they benefit out of your confusion as you did in 1990s. But this time thing will not be the same again, and I hope this should not be your last chance of breaking away.

    Oh dear Southern’s!!

The vision of “New Sudan” is “null hypothesis” has Dr.Lam Akol form a new party in the farm Mother of the SPLA/M so call Sudan people Liberation Movement-Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) within motherhood to win his unsatefacory duties in the cabenit.Akol mighty be right or not righty but this can be review depend on his competencies of forming the party.

Dr.Lam have seen the faile of the “CNC” also know as president of Government of Southern Sudan(GoSS) and first vice president of Republic of Sudan which led by comrade Salva Kiir because Kiir had faile to complies with the opoinon of Southern Sudan which look like “noxious” to tghe entirely people of Sudan particular Southern Sudan where corruption, tribilism, nepotism and insecurity are threan the peoplw but Kiir pay’s deaf ear for the suffering of civilian.

Nevertheless,SPLA/M took’s an arms early 1980s to address such political difference within the country and bring changes, peace and freedom to its people which Akol are addressing today but since our fallen hero Dr.Garang passway Kiir’s leadership devert everything where people are tied of him and i think the time has come for him to step down and let him go to his state and held head of cattle in “Mora”.

Nonetheless,in the 2nd of june this months Kiir made the reshuffling to his cabinet and told his cabinet monisters that he is fighting corruption so tha new face have to be made but by surprise this had never happen but just routine Chair Change or rotation of position to the same people where we have some quilafied people to hold those post better than farm ministers and fail to fire out some corrupted people like Salva Mato,Luka Bioma etc to mention but few who have attempted with public service fund bur nothings have been done to them ,which mean Kiir himself are the one encourging such action and he had to be fire too if he don’t want to step down.

Moreover,Lam’s party have to be recognation as we want to see changes happen and people are treated equal in all circumstance no probem ,and those are thing we fought for over two decade but not interfare with Southern’s motive Goals.

Akol’s mistake is that time are running faster and people are approaching election coming years feb 2010 which exactly eight 8 Months ahead of us when his party are not going to contexts for that matter suppose he would have this so early to prapare the ground for his party before they are not occupted by time facts.

An action which I politically consider is healthy and usefully for the Sudan Political movement whether it has been taken by Dr. Lam Akol or any body else from South or North. We want people get out of the old political frame and pledge for new political ideas chartered by new emerged politicians like Dr. Lam akol. We want al old folks go to pension life or to the junkyards.

You are on the right way. Go ahead man!!

Multipartism in healthier for democracy, but people are casting doubt on Dr. Lam Akol. Yes, the guy is brilliant, but his movement from SPLM/A to enemy NCP, then back to SPLM raise people’s eyebrows.

Would he ever rest or be a strong leader…….

I think your outbreak will call your group back to face against SPLM/SPLA .it showing that you failure will bring conflict to the South likely what you have did year ago ,may sure that the SPLA/SPLM of last time is not the same like present one to put in mind.it was the moment but now it is the Government

Your party will be call SOUTH SUDAN AGAINST DEMOCRTIC RIGHT not SPLM-DC.

I think there is nothing wrong with Lam Akol forming a new political party. It will be a great thing for Southern Sudan because SPLM is becoming too radical without real vision for the country. SPLM need to set its priorities straight, and to do that SPLM need a strong opposition party lead by educated, capable politician.

Despite my reservations, I congratulate Dr.Lam Akol for his new party. Similarly, I urge fellow Southerners to accept multipartism and democracy.

This is the natural consequence of the failed and tribal SPLM system in Juba. A directionless party usually divides and disintegrate. You reap what you sow…

    SPLM-DC, What a Shame!

The so-called Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, a man who has no vision other than power hungry! Lam, it isn’t time that you create a party to oppose SPLM mainstream. We are remaining with only one & half years to determine our destiny and fate!!!

It isn’t surprising that you created SPLM-DC, for you are a traitor of the century in South Sudan.

Just a question, is this new party out to saving from who: North or South? You should have created completely a new party with new name, and not a SPLM-DC.

Southerners, let’s watch out for these squabbles in South Sudan. We may not rule out another split as 1991, with imminent and substantial occurances of violence over South Sudan, being fuelled by our northern partners!

    Who are you Lam Akol?

Your a failure in SPLM/A since 1990 when you collided with RIEK MACHAR when you planned a war against the civilians in Jonglei state, and now you claim to form something with effimanacy
that you can not push forward with a sober mind. The way you acted as a minister in GONU will not qualify you as a head of a party.
