US Congress to examine a resolution on the support of terrorism by Sudanese officials

WASHINGTON, April 6, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) – Two US Congressmen renewed their request to investigate the role of Sudanese officials and determine their responsibility in terrorists acts committed against American interests and the Egyptian President. In a concurrent resolution presented to the House of Representative on March 31 by Donald Payne and Thomas Tancredo, the resolution recognizes the involvement in or in support for acts of international terrorism by senior Sudanese officials. The two US congressmen have requested in a letter addressed on February 5, to US President Bush to bring to trial 12 Sudanese officials accused of supporting terrorism The resolution project recommends that the Sudanese government “revamp and restructure its security services and remove individual who have been involved in acts of international terrorism as part of a final peace agreement”. The resolution asked the Secretary of State to investigate the nature and extent of participation of high ranking officials such as Vice President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha, Nafee Ali Nafee, Ghazi Salahadin Attabani and Awad El Jaz to be investigated. Congressman Donald M. Payne, a Democratic representative from New Jersey, is a member of the Subcommittee on Africa of the Committee on International Relations. While Thomas Tancredo is a Republican representative from Colorado. Sudanese government had strongly reacted to the demand of members of the US Congress to open an inquiry on the alleged Sudan’s support to terrorism. Sudan Foreign minister, Mustafa Osman Ismail, accused the two members of the US Congress of “being hostile to Sudan and try to torpedo the peace process”.
