Sudan SPLM secretariat meet in Rumbek as governor threaten to resign

July 4, 2009 (RUMBEK) — The secretariat of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) at the Lakes State has began on Friday the two-day meeting at the headquarter in Rumbek.

The meeting was held in the presence of SPLM state Chairman Daniel Akot and some officials from the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) such as Anna Itto and the 51 members of State Liberation Council (SLC).

The 51 SLC members are discussing a hot topic but the agenda was vehemently opposed by some key SPLM members causing governor Daniel Awet to put a threat to resign unless party members change their attitude.

According to Assistant secretary for political affair Malou Moses Majok, told Sudan Tribune “that this is Awet manner – his usually talk like that event sometime his call dead in some meeting”.

This is the second time the Lakes state SLC meet to discuss their political since being sworn in early June.

Awet affirmed that “Our SLC springs from Eight Counties of the Lakes State, constituting Fifty One member committee/Council. The roles and responsibilities of the Council are stipulated in the SPLM constitution of the year 2008”.

In Lakes state the SPLM held its conference under conditions similar to the rest of the state.

“The conference was concluded on the second May 2008 with formation of the State Liberation Council (SLC) that you are now members of it. Such autonomous organs our of party are the long standing aspirations of the People of South Sudan” Awet said.

“The SPLM fought against the injustice and stereotyping imposed by the totalitarian governments in Sudan since its independence in 1956. The change for New Sudan we need has been a fundamental objective of the SPLM struggle for more than two decades” he added.

The meeting was held at the SPLM hall in Rumbek at the party secretariat office amid tight security.

A security source told Sudan Tribune that a member belonging to National Justice Movement Party (NJM) was arrested but turned out to be belonging to United Democratic Forum (UDF).

The man named Mayak was later freed the party security official said.

The issues topping the agenda are the financial troubles facing the state, SPLM secretariat election campaign spearhead to win general election and political differences between SPLM members themselves.
