Three South Sudan states face food shortage

July 5, 2009 (JUBA) — Three Southern Sudan states are facing significant food shortage as result of tribal violence and attacks by Ugandan rebels, the semi-autonomous government in Juba said.

A delegation for the federal government led by Haroun Lual, minister of humanitarian affairs, paid a visit to Juba and met on Saturday with the Southern Sudan vice-president Riek Machar to discuss ways to fill the food cap.

Following the meeting, Machar said they agreed together with UN officials to send joint teams to assess the humanitarian needs in the affected areas. He mentioned three states as particularly concerned: Bahar Al-Ghazal, Upper Nile and Eastern Equatoria.

Hassabou Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, commissioner of humanitarian assistance said the meeting discussed the proposed solutions to convoy food to the affected areas and its protection.

The tribal fighting in different parts of southern Sudan and the LRA attacks in eastern Equatoria have negatively affected the agricultural production there.

What a HUGE embarrassment for the GOSS, the government recieved 7 billion dollars from oil revenue since 2005 and it has a population of 8 million. It could’ve spent nearly 1 billion dollars on every 1 million people in the south and they would’ve been living so comfortably now.

The SPLM has totally failed the South, how can the South have food shortage when it’s all green while the North is a desert yet they still feed their people and there are no famines.

    This makes me sick.

    VOTE SPLM-DC!!!!!!!!!!!!

To my own view I consider EES for any help because they have the actual facts, for insatnt they have been interrupt by LRA and Karamajong from Uganda. But those arrogance of Upper teeth/nile plus their neighbours the junglese are nothing but food lovers. They never though of owning farm only stealing is the only to survive. You may get this help because goss is yours but if this Ghost could be on other hands i hope that all of you will starve to grave for your own fualt of staying idol and acting stupidly aganist one another. Shame the World has already known your barbaric act.

Logic is the chairman and founder of Equatorian Resistant Movement (ERM) after achieving its objectives and goals it will reverse to Sudanese Revolution Movement for Democratic (SRMD)

The areas which have been affected by LRA is WES and how comes that am hearing now about Up Nile what happened there?

We in WES Equatoria, we don’t need food what we need is peace and from there we can use our hands which God gave us to get food.

We are not like Junglesians who keep their hand tied and cried for food yet their land is good for Agriculture.

My fellow brothers use your hand to get food then depending on AID which have stricted attacted to it or else take refugees to WES where you can eat free mangoes fruits.

    Brother in Christ,

Guys some of us are really perturbed of reading some of your postings. We have to know that Southern Sudan is still an infant state just turning from a gorrila to a government. It may have to take a while to get things in order. However we ought to acknowledge many progress made by GOSS since 2005. I do not want to list them but the simplest is this website which is freedom of expression. Did we have this before?.I am writing from Australia but this website makes me closer to home.Even if i was to be in Sudan i could still make good use of this forum.

Let us avoid challenging our politicians instead those in Sudan can send their grievances thru local government representatives or attend meetings and have their voices heard. The second advice is that lets avoid using the name of a tribe as it will sound more of steriotype.

Some of us pay lots of respect this forum as a medium of communication,so let us write constructive ideas instead of challenges.
I wish you all the best.

Surely there is a mistake. The article must have meant Western Equatoria rather than Eastern Equatoria.

The Ugandan rebels (LRA) have displaced 60,000 Western Equatorians (Enough_lra_strategy_paper_051209) and killed many others. Western Equatorians have fled their fields to Yambio from fear (Sudan Tribune May 3 2009). They face an impending food shortage (Sudan Tribune May 9 2009).

The problems in Western Equatoria have become a complex crisis that is not recognized by the rest of Sudan. This report hides the problem, since it does not mention Western Equatoria by name.
