Western Equatoria State rejects census results

By Richard Ruati

July 7, 2009 (YAMBIO) — The Deputy Governor and Minister for Information and communication in Western Equatoria State Col Joseph Ngere Paciko has expressed concern over the final result of the population census which was conducted last year 2008 in WES, as saying “the census result exhibited for WES is Unrealistic.”

The final count and result of the Southern Sudan fifth population and housing census results for WES tallied to be 619,029 in which 318,469 were men and 300,560 were females respectively according to the GOSS statistics office.

In an interview conducted by state journalists with Col. Joseph at his State Secretariat office, he pointed out that, “WES’s census result is shocking to everybody,” adding that, WES population is more than of Census publication.

Ngere told reporters that, the state office of the population census headquarter in Yambio had informed his office that, “about 40 areas were not covered, as a result the shocking result is a consequence.” He further said that the state government is “seriously investigating what is behind that.”

The fifth Sudan Population and Housing Census, a milestone in the implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was conducted from 22nd to 30th April 2008. It was the first all inclusive census for people of southern Sudan since the country’s independence in January 1956.

South Sudan Census Commissioner Isaiah Chol Aruai released officially on June 6 the results of the census in the South as 8,260,490. Jonglei state is leading with 1,358,602 million while Bahr el Ghazal has 333,431 smallest population of counted states.

Government of Southern Sudan on July 4 rejected the 2008 population census results, saying it should not be used as the basis for allocating wealth and power sharing in the semi-autonomous region.

Ngere pointed out that, “Although there were issues of logistic problems, most of the areas were not mapped and to make it worst some areas where given different names, otherwise this could have not been the stumbling block, so [we] think that is not the really number of WES”

The deputy governor charges that, “the Northern office is answerable of the formula which concluded WES head count to a surprising figure, accusing the census commission in the North of refusing to show the census data to the international monitors and the Southern Sudan Commission that means there was blunder and misrepresentation of facts behind the southern Sudan population.”

He went further to say the figures of north need to be verified and investigated, otherwise southern will definitely be in a loss and going to be under served national. “If the southerners accept this result then our concern will be less in representation in the National assembly, the issue of border demarcation and the referendum is still beside us.”

This issue is beyond dispute now. Southerners themselves carried out the census so you’re humiliating your own people when you reject work you carried out. This is just a silly ploy to delay the election so that you can’t face up to your incompetence and frankly disastrous governance of the South.

Congratulations Col. Joseph Ngere, we now know that we have people who are awake. Let us stand on our ground and fight for democatic practices. Genuine changes start wuith individuals and other people always learn thereafter.

We have the rights, resources, freedom, and the capacity to get more and more determined for our destiny. we need individuals to understand the circumstances that have led our leaders to talk and point out some of these open acts. It should be understood that leaders will not only be accountable for their failures but also for what they have failed to do.

Col. you have done what other people would neglect, you remain a true son of southern sudan and a prominent leader to work with.
