Darfur IDPs experience night shooting – UNAMID

July 9, 2009 (EL FASHER) — The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Darfur camps continue to experience security problems and complain from water shortages, the UNAMID said today.

The hybrid peacekeeping force conducts daily patrols in and around villages and IPDs camps including night patrols in order to fulfill its mandate related to the civilians’ protection in the troubled region of Darfur.

The UNAMID said in its Thursday’s briefing that residents of IDPs camps “continue to experience indiscriminate shooting by unknown persons during the night in the camps.”

The peacekeeping mission didn’t provide further details about the camps where the shooting had occurred or the identity of the authors.

However, the IDPs spokesperson Hussein Abu Sharati told Sudan Tribune recently about the precarious security situation accusing government backed militias of continuing to carry out attacks against the IDPs camps.

He particularly mentioned this night shooting saying it aims to frighten and destabilize IPDs.

The UNMAID also reported that the IDPs complain about “the lack of water, as well as other physical, social and educational facilities.”

The humanitarian situation in Darfur region deteriorated after the forced departure of 13 aid groups by the Sudanese government after an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for the President Omer Hassan Al Bashir.

Sudan and UN adopted a series of emergency measure to redress the situation and cover the humanitarian caps. However no definitive solution yet implemented despite Sudan pledge to replace the ousted NGOs.

UNAMID military in South Darfur on Tuesday gave food items to women and children of the Dereige internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp. T

hey also provided educational assistance to ten orphans for the next two academic years. The children were also given food items and educational materials.

The ceremony was attended by senior military officials, police advisers and representatives of IDPs.
