Egypt says secession of South Sudan leads to poverty, conflicts

July 27, 2009 (CAIRO) — The Egyptian government today warned about the possibility of the establishment of a new state in Southern Sudan saying it will lead to regional instability.

Egyptian_FM.jpg The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit told the visiting Chinese Special Envoy on African Affairs Liu Guijin that his country is keen on preserving the unity of Sudan.

Aboul-Gheit stressed that Egypt is strongly present in Sudan saying it is building universities, power plants, medical centers and schools.

The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) allows Southern Sudanese to hold a referendum in 2011 to choose whether they want to have their own state or remain part of united Sudan.

Egypt has historically been wary of splitting Sudan up for fear that it will affect its share of the Nile waters which it considers its lifeline.

This week Cairo is hosting a meeting for the Nile basin countries amid growing pressure on Egypt to agree create a more equitable distribution of river water to support power generation projects and agricultural growth.

However, Egypt flatly rejected any changes that will affect its water share bestowed upon it by two agreements signed in 1929 & 1959.

The Egyptian top diplomat said that separation of South Sudan would lead to proliferation of poverty and internal conflict within the new state.

The Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak made the first visit of its kind since 1962 to Southern Sudan last November saying later that it aimed at supporting unity between North and South Sudan.

On the Darfur conflict Egypt appeared to be stepping up criticism of the talks hosted by Qatar between Khartoum and rebel groups.

The Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Amr Zaki said that Aboul-Gheit emphasized the important role of neighboring countries in resolve the Darfur crisis because of its “deep knowledge” in the details of the conflict.

Aboul-Gheit said that talks hosted by “other parties”, in likely reference to Qatar, have been unsuccessful due to the lack of comprehension with the “dynamics” of situation in Sudan and complex tribal relations.

Cairo has invited various Darfur rebel groups this month in an attempt to unite their negotiating positions and seek a platform alternative to the one in Qatar.

Earlier this year the Qatari foreign Minister Hamad bin Jasim Al-Thani speaking to Al-Jazeera TV said that his country’s mediation efforts in Darfur are aimed at removing Arab competing forces and settling the crisis internally.

The Sudanese government and Darfur Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) were engaged in talks since February sponsored by the Arab Gulf state of Qatar.

An agreement of goodwill and confidence building was signed in February but in late June he talks collapsed over disagreement on implementation of the previous accord. Both sides are scheduled to meet at the end of July.

In no ways shall we be considered beneficiaries of other people’s efforts. We shall and will seccede as the new state of south sudan and will protect in our will the security situation of our citizens and shall work upright to provide for our people. we shall not be blindfolded by few mega of electricity and discriminated clinics. we reject that Egyptian demand and for that we will seccede from north. Nile or whatever that falls under us shall be regulated by us and not by foreign people. Egypt has done nothing but to discriminate against out people in cairo.
We are not buying anybody’s interest over ours this time. sorry please go home and eat your rice and wait for the dry nile bed soon.

    Stupid Egyptians!!

What the hell are they talking about? Let us live in poverty then you fools.

Separation is the only option. Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.

Egypt are just concerned about having another country on the Nile. We will renegotiate the Nile Agreement whether they like it or not.

I totally agree the incompetent and corrupt SPLM is in no way ready to be a government of a toilet let alone a new country.
The SPLM has showed what will happen to the South if it seceedes during the past few years.

Moreover the South Sudanese are not ready to establish a state yet. There are many serious issues in the South including huge illiteracy rates, HIV infections, tribalism that need to be addressed before any idea of a state is established

Change the Culture of Arab then Unity:

Egypt should change the culture of Arab in north first then we as Southerns are the first people who will ask North for unity. If you go north now, you will not see any southerns own hotel or restaurant because northerns see you as evil and they will not come to your place to eat or sleep. This is not races, the behaviour of races can be change by the government. It is a relgion (SILAM) which will not be change or you will belife in it. If Water Nile is the one that let Egypt to supporty unity,do not worry we are going to calculate it among the counties that chare the water Nile. For us as southerns, we are done with that culture.

    Dear Ahmed,

Its good that you have posted this stupid Statement to the website, it have given us chance to give very strong comments on your evil policies against Southern Sudan. It is true that no country in Africa that can voice such a Statement through the media; axcept Egypt.

Southern Sudan is going to take it’s rihgt, it may be a seperat country from North if Egypt like or not. the Strungle of SPLA/APLM was not for the favour of egypt: but it was only for Sudanese, and Southerners as well. the CPA signed in Jan. 2005 did NOT include any egyptian agenda on Water resources to be render to them.

Now it will be up to South Sudan to see exactly who is in need of Nile Water, regardless of that of egypt. we have many locations in the Sudan which are in need to benefit from the Nile Water for e.g

1-Western Sudan and Chad, these people will be given first before egypt, either by digging some canal or any possible modern water supply.

2- Eastern Sudan need Nile Water also.

3- Sudanese Agricaltural Scheme must be given more that 40% of Nile Water.

Egypt did NO-THING to the Southern Sudan since before 1956, they ruled Sudan together with other Countries, like British, and Turkey and e.t.c, even now they are the master minded to the Khartoum Government “the Government of NIF”. Egypt thinks negatively to the Southern Sudan, and this kind of islamic arabism of Egypt will let us think over others hiden agandas between us soon, we may claim the ownership of our land from egyptian if they are insisting with this bad behaviour toward us.

Aboulgheit, the agreement is done based on good relation between two country and this was already smoothly signed; where Egypt got lion share percentage, and this will not repeat in next Water Agreement between South Sudan and Egypt.

    “”””””LONG LIVE SOUTHERN SUDAN.””””

We are tired of sharing country with torrists and the entire is tired to stay together with arabs. For your informing, soon South Sudan will an independent STATE and the next step will be to divert the river nile to pass through Khartuom and Libya not Egypt any more. Otherwise, the Egyptian Government must apolgize to GOSS in the next 48 hours for the move not to be taken.

Egyptian should stop their political interference in Sudan, they are going behond their bounaries, that Oil field in the North is the result of Anglo-Egyptian role played 1905 and that will not make them assume to be sudan’s colonialist, they are still Egyptian and should leave my country alone.

    Dear neighbours

Did you not know alreqdy that sudan is the only naturally rich
county in Africa particularly the southern part.Nile water
flows from this part of an area to feed you arabs in the
    north and Egypt.

One thing you need to acknowledge is (CPA)which has sarted to wing away the south with its beautiful resources.
It is automatic and Itell you in 2012 there won,t be any like Nile water flowing at khartoum to the far end.

To South Sudan, Egypt is not of good will. The South Sudan must see this propaganda as a ploy from Egypt just to bolster up its relationship with their Arabs in the North. South Sudanese must fight tooth and nail to know what’s best for them. It’s my firm believe that we are competent enough to govern ourselves. We are abounding with ample resources. Poverty!! What poverty!! Why plenty of oil, gold diamond and fertile land such to mention a few and be scared of poverty? Egypt is saying that you are not having eyes when actually you are watching them in the eye!!! Ludicrous!! My fellow south Sudanese should seize this rare opportunity to determine their future. You wanna unite again? Think of that unification of 1947 and tell me one good thing it has produced? I am ready to be my own man. The North, Egypt and the whole of Arab World that has coerced us in unity ever since must now learn that there is another South Sudan which you have never known. And here we are, not being make fool of anymore!!!

Egypt should know that the good life she has been enjoying is supposed to be in the hand of south Sudan and that whether politically, militarily or otherwise, south Sudan will never and never be led by the Khartoum based leadership. We lost many lives because we don’t need unity and woe to some of southerners who are still being enticed by Bashir.Egypt is dreaming of unity in Sudan and she should be reminded that the future life of egypt is in the hands of Southerners and if she continues with indiscrete attitudes towards south Sudan, they will end up in misrey.
South Sudan is rich and her riches is the one being enjoyed in Khartoum and so after secession, we won’t be poor,we will use our resources, may be, talking of poverty in the north is soudful.
This too much insecurity in the South is because our government is concentrating on our real enemies (the arabs).Egypt is in a total oblivion and should be minded that the future of southern Sudan is bright.
