UN Ban Ki-Moon says deeply concerned by Sudan trousers trial

August 1, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said on Wednesday that he is deeply concerned by the Situation of a UN a staff member working in Sudan who faces 40 lashes for wearing “indecent” trousers in public.

The UN local staff and journalist had been arrested with other Sudanese girls by the Public Order Police earlier in July for wearing trousers. Rights activists say she had been arrested in retaliation against her writings criticizing the Sudanese regime and extremists.

A Sudanese court on Thursday adjourned to August 4 the trial of Lubna after the UN Mission in Sudan said she works with the UNMIS and has immunity.

“The flogging is against international human rights standards,” said Ban during his monthly press conference at the UN headquarters. “I call on parties to live up to their obligations under all relevant international instruments,” he added.

“The United Nations will take every effort to ensure that the rights of its staff members are protected,” he stressed.

Last week when she had been asked if she wants to benefit from the UNMIS immunity, Lubna, told the court she would give up immunity afforded UN staff workers and take the lashes to try to get the Sudanese law changed.

Sudanese women activists in a statement to support Lubna case said discriminatory laws against women “contradict the declared government commitment to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed on 9 January 2005 and the National Interim Constitution.”

Also, yesterday a Sudanese rights group, Sudan Human Rights Organisation-Cairo, called on the Sudanese government to abrogate “laws that violate the international norms aimed to promote the status of women and to maintain the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of women on equal basis.”

The case of Lubna Hussein is exposing to the world the narrow-mindedness of the system in Khartoum. Her case reflects very clearly how primitive the Islamic system is. She has highlighted what I have said earlier that the rulers in Khartoum are the most corrupt people in the world. They have imposed the sharia laws on the country, while they do prostitution and drinking of alcohol behind the scene. Their policemen demand sexual favours from women in order to release them. Is that according to the sharia laws? No, it is therefore useless to have hypocritical system which has no regard for human dignity to be allowed to work in the Sudan. People of Sudan must rise up against this evil so that it can be squashed from our society forevermore.
Mrs. Hussein, let them flog you but they will pay a price for that evil they’re doing against you and other innocent women of Sudan. The day will come when all sorts of injustice are removed from the Sudanese system. Never give in to this nave rules.

Lubna seems to be a woman that like attentions from the public. Now, let’s look at the facts, she knew the law and she insist to wear the trouser and she also wented to quite her job to bring this issue to international community. These are the elements of attention’s seeking. To me, it’s cheap politics so she can be recognize by Sudanese women as a hero. I know it’s wrong to torture women because of their clothing styles. However, graphic types of clothes are not acceptable but trousers are just ok.
