August 6, 2009 (JUBA) -– Civil society organizations are so invisible during the post war era in Southern Sudan, said the Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan during the official opening of a workshop this week on the role of civil society.
In his remarks, Vice President Dr. Riek Machar expressed the importance of reviving the positive role that civil society organizations used to play during the liberation struggle.
Representatives from the civil society, traditional and religious leaders participated in the workshop.
He assured that civil society organizations in Southern Sudan are free to play their role by enlightening the public and playing the role of advocates in this current democratic environment.
“As long as civil society organizations remain in the bound of the law, there is no reason for the government to be sensitive to intervene,” he told the audience.
Dr. Machar who is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) further explained that every political party has affiliates that it organizes into syndicated organizations different from the civil society organizations.
He expressed concern over the invisibility of civil society organizations during this crucial period.
