Southern political party slams SPLM for non-supportive stance

By: Ngor Arol Garang

August 7, 2009 (KADUGLI) — The leader of a South Sudanese political party, Peter Abdel-Rahman Sule, today slammed Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) for not supporting his party, the united Democratic party (UDP) for registration by the federal political party commission.

“Why is it only my party being denied right for registration when other parties including the newly formed SPLM-DC of Dr. Lam Akol are registered, he complained?” Sule asked.

The UDP leader speaking to Sudan Tribune by phone from Juba angrily claimed that his party was denied registration “for being perceived as a proponent of the independence of South Sudan from north”.

Sule accused SPLM of “undermining spirit of alliance with other southern political parties,”.

He pointed out that the UDF was one of the political parties that supported the decision by the SPLM in 2007 to suspend participation in the Government of National Unity (GoNU) accusing the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) of reneging on the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) provisions.

“We [UDF] rose up long to support her position, why are they now maintaining silence in backing us” Sule asked.

“I call upon SPLM leadership to do the same, not only to my party but to other political parties in the same situation,” he said.

He further said that denial of his party’s right for registration “is an absolute violation of the CPA, let alone contradiction of national laws and interim constitution of the Sudan”.

The NCP-DC was registered because it is part of the NIF. So Peter Abdel… should ask the NIF why his party is not registered.

Good for UDP member Peter Abdel-Rahman Sul to raise your voice . Many people in south do not know that your party has been denied for registration by SPM party. So my advice to you or UDP is to joint SPLM-DC party for while and work togather until your registration come, otherwie you will be in waiting lise for registration until you give up.

    Hey Mr Peter Abdel-Rahman,

If you complaint that Lam Akol’s party was registered and your party is rejected by the SPLM/SPLA, then here is the point. SPLM/SPLA can not accepted to register a party which will later on turned itself to be an enemy to the SPLM/SPLA. Although you maybe think that Lam Akol’s party is registered by the SPLM/SPLA, that is completely naive to your point of supporting your party. Take example, as you have seen from Lam Akol’s party, is it serving for the interest of Southern Sudanese? Lam Akol’s party is not a party because we the Southern Sudanese people in diaspora or within Southern Sudan, we can not accepted any party which is being steered by Khartoum Government.

To assure you fully, SPLM/SPLA did not registered Lam Akol’s party in order to exercise its political wing in Southern Sudan. The only party which register Lam Akol’s party was NCP of Omar Bashir. Omar Bashir is the one who registered this party call SPLM/DC of Lam Akol in order to derail the SPLM/SPLA demands on peace implementation. So, do not imposed yourself or created inconvenience issue. If you wants your party to be registered, then I advised you to wait until SPLM/SPLA explored its objection from Khartoum Government. Let us not burdened our mind for no reason of forming the party. Why people don’t formed the party during the time when SPLM/SPLA was on war zone with Khartoum Government? Please Peter Abdel-Rahman, give enough space to the SPLM/SPLA and don’t show yourself like Lam Akol and his supporters plus other allies dangling around within Southern Sudan. I’m glad to well-come your party, but this is not the right time to allege registration for your party.
