30 people killed in southern Sudan Warrap state
August 11, 2009 (JUBA) — Some 30 people have been killed and at least 15 women and children abducted following clashes between two clans of Dinka tribe in northern area of Warrap state in southern Sudan.
The latest outbreak of ethnic fighting in the Tonj north area of Warrap state, once again demonstrates the fragile security situation in the semi-autonomous and crucial need to disarm and deploy sufficient troops to dissuade fighters from carrying out raids for cattle or control of pasturage, rights groups say.
“There are at least 30 people killed, and there are more than 15 women and children who have been abducted,” said Paul Dhel Gum, from the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission.
The clashes between two clans of the Dinka ethnic group, the Luach and the Awan, broke out over cattle and grazing rights on Saturday August 8, said Gum who added that the fighting continued until Tuesday morning.
Juba dispatched a unity of southern Sudan army, SPLA, to the area to end the clashes.
On August 2, some 185 people of the Lou Nuer people and SPLA troops were killed by fighters from the Murle ethnic group in Akobo area, in eastern Jonglei state near the border with Ethiopia.
Further, Lou Nuer killed last Sunday seven Dinka Twic in Jonglei and wounded other five in a cattle wrestling raid.
Yesterday reacting to last week tribal fighting between Murle and Lou Nuer groups, Human Rights Watch urged the southern Sudan government to increase the numbers of police and security forces in volatile areas of Jonglei state. Also the rights group encouraged Juba to probe the violence and prosecute the responsible.
“The Southern Sudanese government and the United Nations need to step up their efforts to protect civilians,” further said Georgette Gagnon, HRW Africa director. The watchdog stressed the UN mission support to southern Sudan authorities had not been sufficient to prevent further violence.

This is just a prologue to what will happen in South Sudan if it opts for separation from the North. Such recent actions in the South confirm the anxieties of the many experts on Africa that South Sudan will be a failed state that will be wrapped in internal civil war worse than what was experienced with the North.
The SPLM is truly incompetent. It is not the movement of the people, it has completely failed to unite the people of South Sudan under one banner, and the Dinka dominated SPLM with its policy of land grabbing has only exacerbated the problem.
The policy of disarmament is too late and has not worked. This is why to this day every country lists the supposed peaceful part of Southern part of Sudan as a no go area due to the total lack of security. It has failed to modernize the Southern people and give them resources to live on and trade other than cows.

I felt sorry for those who lost their lives and the families who are left in pain crying for their beloved one. Blame goes to GOSS of not taking affirmative action on insecurity issue. There is nobody beyound the law, all those responsible must be brought to book of law. We have taken human live to be very cheap junk. The sentence is too short, e.g. people who killed people in 2006 have already been freed. Also the compensation amount is not equivelant to human life, for instance, 30 cows, which are collected from offender relations. This is nothing, they must be punishment and compensation equal to person live. This is unacceptable that government watches innocent children and women died every day. These groups have killed the future of Sudan, they have planted the hatred for the next generation, the generation of this nation will fall into pitfalls created by the tribal fights. The disarmment must take place at any forms,either by force or whatever meant. We cannot accept any group to be notorous in South Sudan. We are all Southerners and deserve to live.

I’m afraid the whole issue may a lie forged by agents of NCP or SPLM-DC to potray South Sudan as already a failed state. Although fighting between clans there is something very common, the news about abduction of women and children seem to be a white lie. Look, I’m from this region and I know it isn’t in the culture of the people here to obduct women and children. Messing with or hanging out with other person’s wife is considered a sin which is punishable by God, and keeping or raising a child who is not yours and not related to is a big shame for the family.

“30 people died in Warrap state because of cows” and other here in Jub claiming to be educated or leader. That is realy shamful. The era of primitivity has already gone. I think lack of rul of law from chaif or clans leaders that brought death. This is bad for future of south. What do you think if one member of GOSS or leader his uncle,nahew ,mother ,brother or family member is killed or defeated in fight and the GOSS has done nothing for it? I think this is going to creat haterad among SPLM/A members soon or later. I think those who protend that they are educated in Joba or in north should go and teach their families to live peacefully than living your family killing each other and come running to joba or north with thinking that you are educated person. To freedum who accussed NCP and SPLM-DC for that.I can tell you that your clans just need rul of law. Whoever started problem should pay price for it through court. Also teach them how to be nice to each other than enemies to each other. We do not want any single life to be lost after many years in fighting.
