Abyei teachers go on strike to protest salary delay

August 12, 2009 (KADUGLI) — The teachers of Abyei town have said today will remain out schools until to be paid their 9-month salary arrears.

Schools in and round Abyei town are on strike since Monday August 10 for an unlimited period of time, demanding immediate payment of their 9 months salaries from the administration, said Ustaz Kuol Monytwic of Abyei town boys primary school.

“There is time for everything, time to wait and time to take action. We have been waiting since November last year yet nothing is being done by the administration,” Kuol said.

Due to the diffidence between the two peace partners on the boundary of Abyei during four years, the central Sudan region of Abyei which has a particular situation in the 2005 peace agreement remained for more than three years without administration or budget.

In June 2008, the roadmap agreement provided to dedicate a special budget to the region but its release faced delay. Now the border conflict is settled, the installation of a functioning administration could take several months.

He went further to inquire what does these individuals at the administration say about us, if at all they are serious, they would have at least lobbied for funds to pay us for at least some months so our families gets some to lower down their pressure on us, he stressed.

He continued to ask that, honestly, how does someone feel about others when someone else is not being paid while the rest are paid. Asked who are these being paid, he said, certain departments including finance have never missed their meals.

If one goes to finance department and education, one will definitely get the difference, Kuol said. He further called on chiefs to urgently bring their (teachers) grievances to the higher level including presidency.

“If our grievances and demands are not addressed, I assure you that we will continuous to remain out of the schools or even close them to go to look for where someone we can get supports to our families,” he said.

Asked where he would go if it takes time for administration to pay them, he said, there are a lot of places to go including NGOs, I was once before being fooled by this administration working for an NGO called Save the Children as education officer. I can return or even look for better alternatives, he said.

The stupid presidency that placed Abyei under its authority has proved to the people of Abyei that it is not interested in the welfare and the future of the region. If the teachers are not being paid, what happened to promises made by the NIF that they would fund the adminstration of Abyei?

The teachers in Abyei should not blame the adminstration of the region but the greedy, corrupt NIF that takes oil in Abyei without thinking of the future of those who own the oil in the first place. This is another proof that the people of Abyei will be better off under the South Sudan Adminstration. I therefore urge GOSS to intervene and help the children of Abyei continue in school.

It is imposible for the teachers not to get their salaries on time. If teachers are going to refused to teach ,what do you think might help our children. This time is not the time of voluntarily work, there are alot OF NGO of which there is position to work with those of Organisation. The government of southern sudan shall work hard to address this problems for non payment to the teachers. There is no system in the south sudan where by teachers should have to paid early rather then delay their salaries. Teachers should have to be more respected because they are second to God if you don,t know that. For Example if you get qurriel with the doctor do you think that you gonna get properly treatment no.
Government of south sudan should stop stealing money or stop corruption. Corruption is now become most popular in south sudan, there are certain people eating puplic money and that is not fair.

Dinka is the chairman of the dinkas liberation movement after it achieving the aims and objectives and it will change soon to be dinkas liberation powers dominants (DLPD)

I don’t really understand exactly what will be the real solution to sustain all the crisis within Southern Sudan?. Last month of July 22,2009, people of Abyei Town get their long pain compensation from the Hague Court in which a territory of Abyei was awarded to the indigenous people of Dinka Jok of Abyei. Today so far, the people of Abyei especially the teachers turned their complain of saying that they have 9 months without being paid.

Now in this case, why Southern Sudanese people themselves don’t give chance to the Southern Sudan Government in order to see or solve other problems which need to be tackled like General Election which will be held on 2011?. As a matter of fact, People of Abyei should give thanks to the Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir Miyardit and Dr Riak Machar Teny instead of raising their complain. There are many SPLA Soldiers who have never receives their money since from the first time when payment was rendered or signed by the Southern Sudan Government and until today, the SPLA soldiers including the Southern Sudanese disables of war are complaining. No one is happy at all!, but did the Southern Sudan Government solves all these problems? I believe not. Then if we know it in that way, then the Southern Sudan Government can not solve the problems of the teachers as they did not solved the problems of the SPLA Soldiers and disables who were been wounded and amputated in war. Our Southern Sudan Government is lacking a lot of things such as system of government, rules to maintain country itself and even the Southern Sudanese Civilians and lack of sharing wealth amongst themselves just to mention few. So to me, I don’t see that the Southern Sudan Government can solves the problems of teachers more drastically than the problems of the SPLA soldiers and disable of war who were been facing a brutality life exeprience in war zone for about 22 years.

With my own analyzes, teachers have right to claim their wages, but this is not the right time for our people in order to overwhelm their own Government. In Southern Sudan, their is too much corruption and I don’t know whether those of Abyei people know it or have never heard about it. Our Southern Sudan Government is not yet stabilized, therefore, everything is in disarray. Abyei people should thanks and extolled Almighty God for having their land back, otherwise the land could be taken by Arabs people from the North. According to my own view, I don’t see anything that a complain can do to us in Southern Sudan. All we needs is to strive for a way in which Arabs should go away from all the Southern Sudan territories and then later on we will come and discussed our own problems in Southern Sudan. I advised the people of Dinka JOK of Abyei in order to calm down their distresses and yield their minds on what is being played by the Arabs people in Abyei ground. Money is nothing, but land is important.

If one of Dinka Jok of Abyei have doubt that what I said is not true to him or to her, then you can take example of Dinka Ruweng of Aloor Community of Abiemnom who were been away in Ruweng land for 22 years since Jafaar Nimeiri sent his first troop to Abiemnom town in 1982 in order to pulverize Anyanya 2 regime and right now they come back to Ruweng land of Abiemnom(Biemnom). This mean that the land is important than money in which some of the other people within Southern Sudan take money as a first priority epitomes. I’m happy that the children of Abyei town are schooling, but this does not mean that if the teachers of Abyei town are not paid, then they will cease themselves from teaching the children. That is “absolutely a big no” to the teachers of Abyei. The children in which they are teaching are they future of Abyei as well as Southern Sudan in a whole. So, let the teachers of Abyei not demands their value on money. If I was in Abyei, I could teacher even if I don’t get paid. There are so many ways to fight for life. One example, is to farm or cultivate.

    Hey Mr Da Vinci,

Would you please use a professional language that show you are a kind of a person who can distinguish wrong from the bad thing? Insulting Rebecca Nyandeng, the wife of our Late Hero Dr John Garang, by saying that she is being “raped somewhere for money”, is not absolutely sound as professional, but a profanity language or abussive word. Do you have your mother? How do you rate your mother as she take care of you when you was a small baby? If you respect your mother, then what is the different between your mother and Rebecca Nyandeng?

My friend Da Vinci, to be honest with you, I’m not from Dinka Bor by Nationality, but what make me to comment about your article is to tell you that, you need to go back to school and learn what is call “Human Philosophy”, otherwise you are exterminating the heritage and the value of Equatorian people. I know that you are from Equatoria Region. Quote me right.
