Sudan remains hopeful on lifting of US sanctions
August 13, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan expressed hopes that the US special envoy to Sudan would come to Khartoum with more promising results on the level of bilateral relations.
US President Obama special envoy to Sudan retired Air Force General Scott Gration is due to be in Khartoum on Sunday for talks on bilateral relations and Darfur peace process.
Mr. Mohamed Mahdi Mandour, Secretary of Political Relations at the dominant National Congress Party (NCP) said today he hopes that Gration would come with more useful results at the level of bilateral relations with Washington.
Sudan, which is engaged in a bilateral dialogue with the US administration, wants the lift of economic sanctions imposed since 1997. However last week, Gration reconsidered his call for the lift of sanctions before the Congress.
In an interview with Reuters, the envoy said he opposed relaxing US sanctions on Sudan. He added that only should be amended sanctions preventing US from sending heavy machinery and other equipment to develop southern Sudan.
However Mandour minimized the significance of Gration statements saying he believes despite reports published by the press the ongoing dialogue is reasonable.
Further the Sudanese ruling party official reiterated that the most important issue of concern for his government is the removal of Sudan from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism and the lifting of the economic.
Mandour also acknowledged the negative impacts that could be caused by many pressure groups acting against the Sudan to these efforts.
But he wished that Obama’s speech in Cairo and Gration statements before the Congress could limit the effects of pressure groups.

Sanctions is not helpful to all sudanese people. Sanctions is slowing down development in Sudan. Under sanctions, marginalised people suffer the most. However, I do not think U.S.A is going to lift sanctions without full compliance from Sudan government.

A doctor can’t treat a disease that he/she does not know. But when a doctor has performed diagnoses,it is always easy for him/her to prescribe the right medicine for treating the disease. Now, the NIF knows very well why those sactions were placed on Sudan in the first place. Bashir and his cronies are sware that their support for terrorists such as Al-Qaeda, Hamass, Somali gunmen, the genocidal policy in South Sudan, Nuba M., Blue Nile, Darfur, and the incomplete implementation of the CPA are the reasons behind the sanctions. The regime should simply comply with international requirements and stop support for terroriests, implement the CPA, stop the genocide in Darfur, and send the war criminals to The Hague. If these thigs are done, I think the sanctions will disappear in no time.

Bashir is dangerous terrorist for his own people of Darfur. When Bashir is allowed to apply his potential with out sanctions his terrorist acts goes beyond Darfur even far to US.
Bashir has to be arrested and democratically elected government has to lead Sudan before lifting Sudan from US terrorism black list.

Yes that is true Kur , unless Sudan is going to comply with an International Democracy ,justice and Human Rights policy otherwise it will be hard for those who had Bilateral or multi-lateral relationship with Sudan to get him out of hook.
People are still dying in Southern Sudan and Darfur under Human Rights violation by Khartoum Government , but still there are those among what so call Supper Power who support Khartoum to share International public rights . The point is ,let the Sudan change its government policy and than everything will be given after change.

Mr Kur is right.I personally think that Mandour’s hope on Gartion’s visit is thoroughly opposite to the expectations of international communities at large and Sudanese population in particular Because he as a political activist would have known how unfairness it does if the National Government tussles its existence at expensive of local population.
For them to escape sanction they would stop doing crimes and release the known victims of such act to be tried by ICC lawyers.
