Student union appeals for unity among southerners

By Ngor Arol Garang

August 17, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – Leaders of the southern Student unions at Juba University campus in Khartoum appealed for unity among southern political parties ahead elections and referendum comes 2011.

“We are appealing to all Southern Sudanese to forget our differences and unite under the leadership of Southern Sudan government to confront enemies of peace and stability in the region” said Tut Hoth Kuot, the leader of Nasser Student union.

Tut went further to add enemies of peace and stability of southern have started to unite their ranks and file in order to foil the Southern Referendum.

The southern Sudan will vote in 2011 on whether to remain part of the current Sudan or to create an independent state. The leader of southern Sudan government Salva Kiir Maydrit said committed to the unity of the country. However he reaffirmed the need to run the popular consultation without delay as scheduled.

History is repeating itself now like in 1978 when the same political parties and elites united to destroy the Addis Ababa Agreement, said the head of Nasser union. The southern leaders are busy supporting tribal conflicts while north is busy mending their differences against southern interest, he said

He alleged that Hassan Turabi, the former leader of the Islamist movement in the country and head of Popular Congress Party, is in talks with dominant National Congress Party to unite under the leadership of President Omer Bashir to kill the aspirations of the people of South Sudan. “The DUP and UMMA are also in secret talks to unite the Northern politicians against the Southern objective,” he adds.

Similarly, an out spoken female student at the union, Awut Baak, said that the people of the South must also be smart to come together under the leadership of Salva Kiir, who should take us to the Promised Land. South Sudan national interest should take precedent over our differences.

“It is time for us to learn from the mistakes of Abel Alier and Joseph Lagu whose political struggles for power led to the division of the South into three regions in violation of the Addis Ababa Agreement,” she said.

The South should not accept going to election without making sure that the followings are implemented. First, the Referendum Bill must be passed into law before any election. Second, the North–South Boundary must be demarcated. Third, the PCA ruling defining nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms has to be implemented in its entirety. Fourth, the issue of the Census must be resolved before going to any election, Awut said.

The NCP cannot talk about election next year without implementing the peace. The people of South Sudan are not kids to be blackmailed into election before all the protocols of the CPA are implemented in their entirety, said another student leader Matur Malual Majak.

Dear southerness unity cann,t come while people are dividing by themselves, unity can come through when people have the same commonality and the same thought. Our government of southern sudan should have to work hard to bring stability of her people and to provide provision and safety to her people. Do you know many people were killed their tribemate in southern sudan it started from Jonglei, which is unity state, Warrap state, Equotaria state, Lake State which is Rumbek and so on . Government should have to awake UP and provide good governance to her people. The only bad things which i can give you little abit description ,there are minjority groups in southern sudan always abusing toward against brothers dinkas people, this doesn,t help us to achieve our common goals. We shall be still behind although other southerness civilise .

Iam very happy to give you this small piece of advise take it and used it as for your own development.

Dinka is the chairman of the dinkas liberation movement after it achieving the aims and objectives and it will change soon to dinkas liberation powers and dominants (DLPD)

Students are the backbone of any society, so you must be very active in promoting unity among our people. If you do not think of the future now, what is facing the current leaders will face you when you takeover from them. Therefore, narrow tribal ideas must be removed from South Sudan’s political scene. And who will do this? you the student. Remember too, SPLM was and is a student movement. Hence, you can change the world if you want.

It is a good initiative though, but the question is did you treat the root cause before you talk about treating the diease? There would be no unity in Southern Sudan until the Dinka people change their ill behaviours. People are dying of hunger and disease related in Southern Sudan, while Dinka are building luxury homes in Diasporas. Dinka send thosands of Dinka students to foriegn countries by using Southern money because they thought Southern Sudan is theirs. Dinka feel no shame when it come to food related. They forgot that Southern people are watching them. I am begging all Southern patriots to be persistence untill December 2011 because if we get rid of this cancer the immune system would be weak.

To Tut Hoth & Awut Baak,

Thank you for your tremendous words that is a kind of educations we need!!!! In fact, Northern politicians are uniting to pursue their aims. They are working day and night to dishonoured the Comprehensive peace Agreements CPA like 1972 Addis Ababa Agreements as mention in the article.

But what can the Southerners do about it? The future of this counntry in our hands, we young people. The enemies of South Sudan must know that their little benefits should not be beyond the South sudan’s interests.

The Juba Parliament must know the Jallaba is not someone who is brown in color but the persons who is working against our interests (we Southerners) is a Jallaba. I would you feel when 185 lives lost in a day? SPLM/Goss don’t let us down again.

There are troops in each and every state in all ten states of Southern Sudan, what is a used of that troop?. or are they just there waiting for Sudan Army Soldiers SAS to come into the state? or guarding the grasses?

The government of South Sudan should protect the civilians from the thugs and must tell the NCP/NIF to stop smuggling weapons to Southern tribes!!!!!

    Who are those Student union??

If you are just students who know nothing about what is happening in South Sudan then shut up your mouth and continue to be student.

SPLM Government will never have unity if the currenty government is still in power.

My advice to those students is, if you are in Khartoum enjoy your Fulu Masli than deeping your mouth into the fake and failed policy of SPLM.

    Brother in Christ,
