Sudan appoints its first ambassador to Venezuela

August 19, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan has appointed its first ambassador to Venezuela, a move that comes one year after Caracas opened an embassy in Khartoum.

The government of Venzuela accepted on Wednesday the diplomatic credentials of Ambassador Abdel-Rahman Ahmad Sharfi, reported the official SUNA.

Sharfi had served as Ambassador in several countries, including the Embassy of Sudan in Harare, New Delhi – and Nairobi.

Venezuela has established diplomatic relations with Sudan in 2005 as President Hugo Chavez’s administration seeks stronger ties with African nations.

Following the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for President Omer Al-Bashir, President Chavez rejected the ICC decision against his Sudanese counterpart and invited him to visit Venezuela which a state party to the war crimes court.
