JEM rebels urge Libyan leader to end Darfur conflict
August 24, 2009 (LONDON) — The rebel Justice and equality Movement (JEM) has urged the Libyan leader to exert efforts to end the six year conflict in Darfur during his presidency of the African Union.
Muammar Gadhafi met on Sunday August 23 with a delegation of the rebel group led by Dr. Khalil Ibrahim who is visiting the country for talks on Darfur peace process.
“The Movement wants peace and we are sincere in this,” said Ibrahim in a speech before the Libyan leader. “We believe that it is in the interest of the Movement and the people of Darfur, to address this problem and you are in the African Union command,” he further said.
Libya plays a broader role in the Darfur peace process since the deadlock of Doha talks between Khartoum and the JEM over the implementation of a goodwill agreement they signed last February.
The rebel movement asks to release more than hundred fighters detained since an attack on the Sudanese capital in May last year but the government refuses and says it would free them gradually after the signing of a ceasefire agreement that JEM refuses.
The mediators failed to persuade Khartoum to change its mind and free some of the death sentenced rebels despite the release of 60 government soldiers by the rebels last July.
Speaking at the meeting, the Libyan leader regretted that Darfur has become a region of war and insecurity. He also stressed that peace would be first in the interest of Darfur people.
He further said that Darfur conflict topes the agendas of the upcoming African Union summit on security and peace in the continent scheduled to be held in Tripoli at the end of August.
JEM delegation discussed with the Libyan officials ways to end the current impasse on the Doha peace process.
Sudan and JEM said committed to the Doha talks and dismissed the transfer of the peace process to Tripoli.
Libya is also conducting parallel efforts to ease tension between Sudan and Chad.
Yesterday the US President special envoy to Sudan praised Libyan positive role in resolving the conflict in the Darfur region.
“I’m very impressed and very grateful to the role that the Libyans are playing not only in rebel unification but in bringing peace between Chad and Sudan,” he said.
“I see the Libyans have a very positive role… and we are very proud to be partners with the Libyans,” he added.

JEM rebels urge Libyan leader to end Darfur conflict
When South Sudan rebelled against its government since 1950s and until the finally peace accord, nothing have verified that South Sudan is not capable of governing it self , I think Mr. Muammar Gadhafi is using contradictory against South, it’s North who is going to suffered more because of economics benefits will be shift away.
All the resources will be allocated for Southerners and the economics of North will be falling terribly, for instance; Oil, Agriculture, and wildlife and so on, these are country economics back born.
Another thing is that, population dense from Northern Cities will be moving to South as many people will find opportunities in the South, however, this could harm the economics of North seriously. Economics booming needs high population to buys its goods and services.
If South will be giving North Sanction, it’s another account for weaken their economic, as a result, you will find that Northern government will split and many movement will be formed and finally the country will be torn apart and everything will be in jeopardy.
If we were capable of organizing rebels movement, why not the country?
If South need bloodshed to gain it independent from North, we shall go for it, if it take politics and democracy, we are still having capacity of achieving it, we got resources and manpower to support our struggle.
Muammar Gadhafi must stop his cheap politics, South Sudan will be a separate state by all means, no matter what, and we deserve our own country.
Gadhafi must stop his weak Accusation, South will be a free State beyond’s Prophet Mohamed idea.
