Sudan peace partners fail to agree on ministerial posts in Lakes state
By Manyang Mayom
August 27, 2009 (RUMBEK) – Delegations from the southern Sudan ruling party, SPLM, and Sudan’s dominant party the National Congress Party (NCP) have failed to settle their longstanding difference over the ministerial posts in the state government.
In accordance of the 2005 peace deal, the two parties agreed to reserve ministerial posts for each other in the 26 Sudanese states in the two parts of the country.
Since the resignation of the former NCP minister of agriculture and Animal resource col. Khamise Abdulatif Chawol Lom, from his post in 2006, the Lakes state government is operating without the northern Sudan ruling party.
In July 3, 2006, Col. Khamise Abdulatif told Sudan Tribune that he has resigned from his ministerial post due for misunderstanding between him and the cabinet of Lakes led by the former governor John Lat Zechariah. He said that his plans and projects for the rehabilitation of the agricultural projects in the region were ignored.
In a meeting held on Thursday at the premises of SPLM Rumbek, the NCP members rejected to discuss their ministerial post in the state government arguing the matter should be tackled at the national level between the two parties.
The SPLM Chairperson and Lakes governor, Mr. Daniel Awet Akot said the issue can be settled on the state level and adjourned the meeting for the weekend for further consultations between the two partners.
The two parties had held a first meeting on the issue on Saturday August 8 for nine hours but they failed to reach a deal on the issue.
The NCP blames the governor Akot for refusing to give them the ministry of agriculture and reject the proposed ministry of health.
Also relations between the two parties are deteriorated since 2007 when the NCP leader in the State Arkangelo Deng Kuok accused, in a letter sent to the Sudanese and Southern Sudan presidents, the government of failing to manage the Lakes state. The governor asked the NCP leader to apologize but his request was rejected.
