Sudan slams Libyan leader over pro-secession remarks

August 27, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government today expressed outrage over statements by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in which he reiterated his support to an independent South Sudan.

Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Ismail

Gaddafi in a meeting with leader of the Darfur Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Khalil Ibrahim this week said that Southerners culture and language are different from the rest of Sudan and therefore it is logical that they vote for independence in the 2011 referendum.

The Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Ismail said that the Libyan leader’s statements “if true would represent a dangerous shift and big change to the convictions of Gaddafi on African unity and the unity of Sudan”.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in Sudan have said that the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) mandates that both sides would work “to make unity attractive”.

Some NCP officials have gone as far as insisting that the referendum law that has yet to be passed, should make the choice of secession difficult.

Among the key sticking points in the draft bill of the law is the percentage of votes required in the referendum to declare it favoring independence, determining the post-referendum process and the share of Sudan’s debts the South would carry with it if it secedes.

The NCP is pushing for a 75% ‘Yes’ vote for South Sudan to be allowed to secede, something the SPLM rejects.

The political bureau officer at the NCP Mandoor Al-Mahdi said that Gaddafi’s remarks are “unacceptable and unfortunate”.

“It is bizarre and inconsistent with his ideology calling for Arab and African unity and it is inconceivable that he would be a contributing factor to division….we are with Sudan’s unity and that South and North should remain united” Al-Mahdi said.

The NCP official said that Khartoum would request clarification from Tripoli.

Last June Gaddafi sparked anger by Khartoum when the Sudanese First Vice president Salva Kiir disclosed that the Libyan leader pledged to him that he would support an independent South Sudan.

The Libyan embassy in Khartoum at the time denied that Gaddafi made any such remarks in his meeting with Kiir.

People are entitled to their opinions. Gadhafi will not vote in the referedum in South Sudan, and neither will he change our minds on our quest for freedom. He is using a simple logic that the people of South Sudan are tired of being a third class citizens in a country that they think to be their home. Since they have little or no rights to live in freedom in Sudan, the people of the South have the right to form their own homeland. This is what Gadhafi is saying. we’re done.

Where is the dog that was taking Gaddafi’s statement on the strengths and weaknesses of an independent South as a statement of his opposition to South’s independence? Now even his employers have finally realized that Gaddafi has no problem with South parting ways.

Khartoum should not accuse Gaddafi. Gaddafi is saying what southerners are saying. Southerners do not need Unity that marginalized Southerners. Southerners are asking NCP to leave them alone. Mind your own business.

    Referendum is simply like 1 + 1 +1 +1 + 1 + 1 + 1+ 1 = 8. Let’s use the equation for the referendum in the Sudan.

    Thanks

Bravo Muammar Gaddafi for the brave position you have stated, the people of Southern Sudan have the right to saperate from the devils of the north. Those who claim to be the representative of God on earth, the most warse enemies of Islam on earth.

I wander whether the NCP people realy knows God if they do, they could not try to force Unity on us. Mr.Mandoor Al-Mahdi let me tell you, that enought is enought, leave the people of South alone to decide for themselve, or you also wanted to claim that God has deligated you to speak in the name of Southerners.

The history of NCP is in our heart, time will come when we will start ———. Your terriorist ideology will never treaten us.

South must go, South must go and it must go,if you like or not,South will go by force or in peaceful me.

    Hi Readers,

I want to say that “Truth is aways bitter” when said to those who have hidden it for decades. Members of the leading northern party have reacted bitterly towards the true statement said by Muamar Gadaffi about the 2011 referendum in favour of southerners.

Now we are not bending down to you what you did to Southerners in 1972. This is not the time for sharia Law. Those tricks are long gone and the new breed of Southerners cannot allow the North to abrogate this agreement nor temper with any stipulated article.

Who can stop the Independence of Southern Sudanese? How will it be Stopped? Where in the world can injustice be tolerated amodist growing democratised societies?

The South Sudanese Have already decided their destiny and no one will stop it from being reached.

Together for self determination come 2011.

Who do you think you talking to? Gaddafi, you know him very well. He is not Mabarak. In fact, nobody in Sudan divide the Sudan. You yourselves treat Southern people harshly for long time. You the one support disunity, not Gaddafi. Because you don’t know how you support disunity that is why you blame Gaddafi. The people of Southern Sudan don’t like your regime. So, the world give them freedom to decide what is better for them. I’m sure they will decide to stay away from your regime because you marginalised them for long time. So, NCP is the one divide South and Sudan.
