US hints at delay in Sudan policy review
August 31, 2009 (WASHINGTON) — The US administration’s comprehensive policy review on Sudan has yet to be completed, an official here said today.
Today the spokesperson of the US State department of State Ian Kelly said that the special envoy Scott Gration is expected to present his recommendations to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“We expect this one to be completed sometime in the coming weeks,” he said.
Both Obama and Clinton will have the final say on whether to sign off on the policy recommendations amid reports of deepening rifts within the administration on the approach to dealing with Sudan.
Gration has made public statements supporting easing sanctions on Sudan and lifting the latter from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism.
However, he later told Reuters that his remarks have been misunderstood and that he does not want sanctions to be lifted except to the extent that contributes to development in South Sudan.
Officials from Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) slammed Gration’s “stance reversal” after weeks of hailing his “courage”.
Darfur activists have launched an advertising campaign in US newspapers urging Obama to step up pressure with a subtle criticism suggesting that he has backed away from his presidential campaign promises last year.
The UN estimates that up to 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have fled their homes amid violence that started six years ago in Darfur.

Mr envoy, delaying the Sudan policy is not good news for Sudan. your boss President Obama been talking about the Sudan policy went he was a candiated running for the Office. this is the time you have to do the action. we are desperatly waiting for the changes in sudan, unlike the NCP party which had done in past 50 years which left the country the poorest countries in African, Splm is the party for the people, SPLM had done unbeliveable things ih the past four and half years.
