Akol denounces tribalism in South Sudan

By Ngor Arol Garang

August 31, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The former Sudanese foreign affairs minister and a leader of a newly formed SPLM-DC, Dr. Lam Akol today condemned tribalism adding its pins down development in Southern Sudan.

Lam Akol (C) at the founding convention of the SPLM-DC at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum on Monday August 31, 2009 (SUNA)
Akol, who was addressing members of his party and invited guests at founding convention held in Khartoum, said that South Sudan leaders promoting tribalism and sectarianism with intention to get into public offices are the causes of current security threat in the south.

Dr Lam Akol, founded last June the SPLM-DC after a long silent crisis with his former party, the SPLM. He said he wants to save the SPLM from the “abyss” and said that its leadership are “bankrupt” and “undemocratic”.

Emphasizing on the organization of his party and unity among southern political parties at the convention, he said implored to see Sudanese in general and particularly Southerners to live in harmony as a family.

“Politics should not be carried home with us from work places. Go home and meet your home mates as, relatives, colleagues in the schools, armies and as good friends.”

“Do not extend political debates to villages where they are misunderstood to cause havoc with subsequent killing of innocent children and women as in the case of recent tribal clashes in Jonglei and Warrap states,” he advised.

“No, No, don’t trust such leaders who want to divide the country on tribal grounds,” he said while declining to mention specific names.

However, he pointed out that there are some leaders in the South and particularly in the SPLM who use tribalism as alternatives to getting into political positions. An allegation SPLM officials deny saying such practice never existed in the beginning of the movement till Lam joined the movement in 1986 with plans to topple late Dr. John Garang with current GOSS Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar, retorted Garang Atak, an SPLM member in Khartoum.

Akol continued to say it is unfair to judge or favor certain individuals based on the places of origin instead of abilities and condemned those who want to divide the southern into tribes for their benefits.

This remark surprised many who wondered why Dr. Lam Akol who has in recent past suffered lots of tribal allegations including having been a driver for 1991 SPLM/A split resulting into Bor massacre.

His choosing to discuss the highly sensitive topic of tribal identity at a national convention delighted invited guests to understand he seeks solution to southern problem.

However, at SPLM Khartoum office, supporters criticized these remarks describing his party as a sell out for southern interest.

“Where did he (Lam) get the money to transport all the delegates to the forum,” it is from National congress Party, said, Wol Adim, an SPLM member in Khartoum.

“He is just looking for ministerial appointment, if SPLM reappoint him now, you definitely see him again abolishing this party. He is a power hungry fellow southerner,” he said.

Lam has said in many occasions that he will contest all positions including position of the president of the government of Southern Sudan except national presidency.

The convention is expected to last until September 2 in the Friendship Hall, Khartoum. The SPLM-DC said it had been forced to hold this convention in the national capital due to the hostility of southern Sudan ruling party toward its activities.

Representatives of the National Congress Party, the United Democratic Salvation Front, the Democratic Forum of Southern Sudan, SANU, USAP, and the National Justice attended the opening session of the convention.

My congratulations to SPLM-DC for their historic move. Please keep on for democratic change as your name shows, don’t be like old SPLM which has abandned its objectives and turned to be thieves and looter in the bright day light

If you prove to be truthworthy, the majority of Southerners will support you in the coming elections because they are fed-up with SPLM lies and corruption. Keep going, victory is yours. SPLM thieves are now dying with grudge when they see you growing everyday.

I also totally agree with Dr Akol, a true asset to the people of the South. The kiir SPLM government has totally lost control of the South and continues everyday to prove its uselessness.

I agreed with brother Oshy Kiir has totally failed to manage South Sudan and that one has paved him smoothly way to fail in 2010 and after 2011 and that will give the chance to true son of South Sudan to take power from those people who have the atitute of born to rule.

One key word for a leader “Trust,” I wonder if Dr. Lam understand its significance. Trust is to ahve people believe your words, promises and intentions. Which of these three can people do about Lam or Riek? It had nothing to do with being Shilluk or Nuer, it’s purely an ethic issue. I believe there are more educated, ethical and dedicated Shilluk and Nuer (e.g Pagan Amum & James Hoth) who are ten times better who can be trusted than these guys. Trust is possible only when a person had a credible history. Dr. Lam like Dr. Riek and Kuanyin Bol and abunch of other false brothers in 1990s – 2000s fluctuated between the North and South during the civil war. It doesn’t means they didn’t fight for SPLA, but when SPLM/A needed them the most, they joined the enemy and hammered their own people – SPLA/SPLM, and when the Arabs in the north frustrated them, they ran back to the South (back and forth). They had been used as a poisonous pendulum by the north and the South. Both SPLM and NCP knows that these guys can hardly be trusted. Thinking that Dr. Lam had somehow changed, SPLM made Dr. a foreign Minister after CPA, but as if to confirm his defiance, go back to 2005 – 2007 news and read how he completely forgot the position of his people (SPLM) and how he on the contrary represented NCP squarly – how interesting! I personally find it very hard to trust his motives. When things get tough, he can defect anytime soon! I agree that Salva Kiir may not be doing a good job in development now and is not as much educated like Riek or Lam, but at least he will surely stand with his people when the enemy comes. He who betrays his people can NOT demands more trust, it just don’t add up.

If Lam Akol and his cohorts of turncoat were true to Southern ideals, they would be hosting their convention in Juba in South. Instead, they are playing a second fiddle to NIF tune and now making a show in Khartoum for North’s consumption. If they ever venture South, I have a feeling that they will be hung on the tallest tree. Traitors!

    SPLM/A Oyee!! Secession forever!

SPLM-DC has excellent move.To those who love democracy and hope for each person in south to have his/her right to get a job according to qualification rather than tribalism, to be secured from raiders and tribalism, stick with SPLM-DC other wise you are going to watch Salva Kiir doing what he has been doing since start of CPA by hiring his families and tribe with out embarrassment to him. So let us join together and tell him that the opportunities and properties you are giving to your families now are for all southerns. We are going to change El Barehgizal culture which we have never had in south and stop this culture from expended among the southerns. Election is coming,do not look at your friend with red eyes just tell people of south what good things you have done to them and what are you going to do for them next.God bless SPLM-DC.

I don`tknow why people are afraid of Akol`s SPLM-DC.My friends i want to tell you something,as one of the Southern Sudanese intellectual.
politic in Sudan is not good, because most of us in Sudan don`t understand it, but we are after position, and money, starting from NCP to SPLA.Am not a member of any party but am following their evens.
everyday alot of insulting words to SPLM-DC and NCP,& SPLM.
why are afraid of Lam Akol party and Omer Al bashir NCP,the more you talk about something the more it become familiar,SPLM-DC is becoming familiar becoming you are lifting it by insulting, accusing, blaming complaining as SPLM during the time of strugging was being insulted,blamed,accused…..etc.
This demonstrates that we Sudanese, specailly Southerners are not mature in politic. The worst thing we have before three weeks ago the killing of NCP member in South brought shame on us,that Lady is one of our daughter,we lost her, she is not from Northern Sudan, imagine how many Southerners are there in Northern Sudan.if the measure is applied to them how can they survive.we have to reform and have good base.
stop killing, corruption and all these nonsense, and start new era.

Indeed, SPLM-DC is a a party for genuine change; the change that must come so as to save Southern Sudan from the vice of destructice tribalism. Dr. Lam Akol and his team in the SPLM-DC have done a wonderful job.

There is no doubt that genuine change is coming through SPLM-DC with the determiation of its cadres to bring good news to the badly affected areas in the Sudan.

The youth who have right minds and good hearts have already joined the SPLM-DC in masses. And any political party and a leader who is suppored by strong and intelligent youth is on its way to victory. See how President Obama succeeded in USA by great support of the youth. The same is happeneing today in the Sudan, especially Southern Sudan with Dr. Lam and his serious team of the SPLM-DC.

Whoever is traumatized by the emergence of the SPLM-DC should learn to respect the determination of this genuine new political party with its entire leadership.

Those who have been ensalved by the past of Dr. Lam should learn to liberate themselves from their bad indoctrination about this savvy politician who does not joke around when things are moving on bad direction.

There is no way to accept backwardness. Genuine change must come through SPLM-DC whether in the presence or absent of Dr. Lam. If you are anti-change, the change will change you.

So please stop looking at the SPLM-DC as a personality cult of Dr. Lam; look at it as a well organized political institution regardless of personalities.

Come and join the SPLM-DC if you are for genuine change. Remain in the SPLM or other collapsing political parties if you are for bad status quo, especially tribalism and corruption. It is your choice.

Long Live SPLM-DC and Long Live its Cadres and Leaders with their unwavering determination for genuine change!!!

Partially, Dr Lam Akol is correct because, these people who are still dying in southern sudan under tribalistic basis are not suppose to be died again irrelevant death and yet there is “CPA” within the country.this died of those people shows that there are wrong element group who are sabotaging the “CPA” process in Southern Sudan, but mind you dr Lam Akol, you are very confuse.com person ever Southern Sudan people have. Why did you held that convention contains relevant points at the wrong place together at the wrong time? why can’t you come and do that convention at the right place, doing the right things at the time within the gathering of your people who are suppose to receive messages of yours.

Make no mistake again, because people of south Sudan suffered a lot in your hand during 90s just because you were hungary of power and if you still with that attitudes, then very soon you and fucking “PNC” will be sent to ICC to diserve your crimes against innocent people.

    Thanks.

The mean question that we need to addressed is that, Who is behind tribalism in Southern Sudan? I think those who are behind tribalism are those who hart the SPLM/SPLA because they want the SPLM/A to fell so they can win. But the SPLM/A will never fell because they have did the heavies part of struggling. However, even though Tribalism seen the big issue now in the South, the SPLM/A is working on the ways to solve it. My friend who knows maybe Lam Akol is pretending and he is behind tribalism in the South.
