No more time to make unity attractive – Salva Kiir

September 14, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – South Sudan President said last weekend that the remaining time is not sufficient to make unity attractive between northern and southern Sudan.

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January 2005 provides that southern Sudanese should decide on whether to remain within a united state or establish their independent state. It also exhorts the two parties to make unity attractive through providing better services and undertaking development projects in the South.

The Khartoum based Al-ray Al-Aam reported that Salva Kiir said the remaining time for the referendum is insufficient to make unity attractive.

The First Vice President made these remarks in a speech delivered at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Cathedral in Kator-Juba where he used to pray every week.

He further accused his peace partner, the National Congress Party of dragging feet over the CPA implementation adding there are many outstanding issues that are not yet implemented.

The talks between the two parties are deadlocked on the referendum and the census results.
