Ethiopia denounces attack on African peacekeepers in Somalia

September 18, 2009 (ADDIS ABABA) – The government of Ethiopia strongly condemned suicide bombers coordinated assault against an African Union peacekeepers base in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab suicide bombers on Thursday carried out at least two car bombs at AMISOM Headquarters killing a number of peacekeepers including the deputy military commander for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and wounding many others.

The suicide bombers run into the AMISOM military compound in Mogadishu, driving two UN marked but looted UN Vehicles.

Al-Qaeda’s East Africa partner, Al-Shabaab, which took responsibility for the attack said that the attack was launched in response to the killing of a senior Al-Shabaab leader earlier this week by US forces.

In a press statement issued after what it called it was “coward attack” ,the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday said that, The latest terror act is a further testimony of the continued threat posed by Al Shabab and its international recruits to peace particularly in Somalia and at the region in general.

“Indeed, it is altogether fitting that such attacks, tragic and deplorable as they are, be met with added resolve and commitment equal to the challenge.”

The ministry further said “the choice of targets and the cowardly means employed clearly indicate how desperate the terrorists are in the face of the joint efforts by the TFG, AMISOM as well as other forces of peace to checkmate their murderous campaign.”

The statement further said that the terrorist attack is a stark reminder that these forces do not have even the slightest of interest in any national reconciliation efforts in the country at all.

The Ethiopian government urged the international community to redoubles its efforts already underway and to renew its commitment to support the cause of peace in Somalia.

The attacks were also condemned by the AU, IGAD, UN and a number of others.

All condemned it saying that the act was entirely unacceptable and called upon all Somalis to renounce violence and to work jointly with the transitional federal government towards national reconciliation.
