The three groups took part in a meeting, sponsored by the US envoy for Sudan Scott Gration, held in the Ethiopian capital on August 22 attended also by three Sudan Liberation movement (SLM) factions. The participants in Addis Ababa meeting adopted a road map aiming to involve all Darfur rebel groups in the Doha peace process and also agreed to engage a gradual unity process.

Cairo meeting, which is also supported by the US envoy, gathered two rebel movements initially splinted form Justice and Equality Movement (JEM): United Resistance Front (URF) of Idriss Abu Garda and Democratic Justice and Equality Movement (DJEM) led by Ibrahim Azraq, besides the United Revolutionary Force Front (URFF), an Arab Darfur rebel group led by Ibrahim Izat.

The three groups said in a statement released Wednesday from Cairo they agreed in a four-day meeting, October 3-7, to from committees to prepare for the holding of a joint meeting inside Darfur to reunite their groups ahead of peace talks with the Sudanese government.

They further said supporting the current efforts conducted by Mr. Djibril Bassole, the AU-UN Chief Mediator.

“The negotiated just and peaceful solution between the parties is the best option to achieve the legitimate rights and wishes as well as aspirations of the people of Darfur and Sudan,” the statement said.

The three groups were part of a Libya sponsored process to reunite Darfur rebels. But they refused to be part of the Sudan’s Liberation Revolutionary Forces (SLRF) established in Tripoli on August 30 saying they want the founding meeting to be held in Darfur with the participation of their commanders and among their bases.

Cairo’s statement also called upon “all our fellow of the armed movements to participate (in their process) for the success of the ongoing unity’s efforts to reunite the forces of the armed resistance in Darfur.”

In a parallel move US envoy conducts a similar process to reunite three groups of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement. The SLM factions are expected to hold their meeting this month.

Ahmed Abel Shafi, a leader of one of the rebel groups that preparing to hold a unity meeting in Darfur told Sudan Tribune last week they plan to gather the two blocks of the rebels in one movement.

Three Darfur rebel factions agree to launch unity process
The U.S presidential envoy Gration,in stead of conceding his defeat was gathering pieces of splitter factions to goad them to the Doha process, however the is one fact Gration was refusing to accept;with intention, and that is;the factions he is sporting to blow the wind of survival on;were community outcast;since they are intending to reach Arab negotiated settlement of Doha.and most of them are sell-outs.I advised Gration somewhere in my comment to declare his on faction and see where to unite his protégées,but not in the SLM liberated areas; and I think the leadership of SLM is not the Arbenz Government of Guatemala that Gration can change easily.Meanwhile the python of our noble cause has already addicted swallowing big figures; some of them vanished from the political scene, with curses of the IDPs and refugees pursuing them, whereever they went; and Iam seeing it ,creeping with patient to swallow Gration;the U.S army veteran are you ready?.
