South Sudanese students clash with each other over political rally in Khartoum

October 10, 2009 (BOR/RUMBEK) – Students of Juba University, located in Khartoum, clashed with each other Saturday over a political rally. Several students are injured and others arrested by police, eyewitnesses told the Sudan Tribune.

Students loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and rival Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) clashed when the latter allegedly forcibly conducted an unregistered political rally. Gatherings for legitimate organizations are allowed and are conducted on Saturdays in Sudanese universities.

Dennis Marial, a student in University of Juba, said that the supporters of SPLM-DC came in five cars to the University of Juba El-Kedro campus to carry out the rally, escorted by police. They were armed with guns and clubs.

Another source told Sudan Tribune from Khartoum that the SPLM-DC supporters were asked to go and register first with the students’ league, but they refused and started fighting SPLM supporters. The source, talking on condition of anonymity, accused the SPLM-DC disciples of being “extra-organized” prior to the rally and targeting SPLM supporters.

According to Marial, the SPLM students’ league objected to the rally and requested SPLM-DC to follow the formal procedure of the University by getting registered as SPLM-DC to hold the rally normally instead of drawing guns and starting the battle.

Marial told Sudan Tribune by phone that “we have fought with SPLM-DC and we expect tomorrow to be worse.”

He also added that about ten from SPLM supporters had been injured and over twenty people from SPLM-DC are wounded. A conflicting report came from another source, who said that “several students are injured but mainly from the SPLM side,” due to police involvement against the SPLM supporters.

Five SPLM and nearly all SPLM-DC supporters were arrested. The SPLM supporters were briefly held and then set free.

SPLM-DC was formed in June 2009 by Lam Akol, a figure who was part of the coup within the SPLA command in 1991. He helped form an alternate faction that came to be known as SPLA-Nasir, but later temporarily reconciled with the SPLA-mainstream ahead of its 2005 move into a minority share of national power in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Upon breaking with the SPLM leadership in founding the new party, Akol cited an undemocratic system in his former party. On the other hand, the SPLM accused Akol of being an opportunist and being used by the National Congress Party NCP to tear Southerners apart.

Neither SPLM-DC nor SPLM leaders were reached for comment in this article. SPLM-DC supporters could not be reached to tell their part of the story or to comment.

This is what we expect of a criminal organization formed with the principle of destroying the hopes and aspirations of the people of South Sudan. We must all put a stop to this nuisance. It is not a normal political party but an agent of doom against our people.

    Mr. John,

I think you’re a most hallow- minded tribal agent of the NCP. You’re working hard to destroy our freedom but we will not allow parasites like you to decide our fate. We will stop you all traitors.

Is there is no any other way the islamists fanatics in the North could use to overcome Suotherners rather than using this aguna and gulible person call Lam? Forceful recuitment to INF’s branch called DC will not work!

By now, arabs must learn that thier dirty tactics is well known to every Suotherner whether residing in the country-side or in big cities in the south. Arabs must get over these false illussions that they will use samo-samo tactics and simply accept the fact that South is already an independent country.

It is a matter of time, Suotherners will be in peace!!!

    Thanks

SPLM-DC has become the major problem in the Southern Government. Lam Akol tried harder to spoiled SPLM reputation by any means.
How come SPLM-DC launched unregistered political rally forcefully inside the university. I thought, It would be better when the rally was not forcfully launched in School, they should make their contest on the Khartoum streets. Lam Akol has caused that kind of incident that happened in Khartoum.
We all know that Akol will regrete in future for all the problems he cause against SPLM.
I have doubt where Akol will go when South Secede.
I am really sorry for those students who have injured because of the hungery food lover- Lam Akol.
I believe Lam Akol is nothing in the South and will not do anything too in the Sudan. I believed NCP should put Lam to jail because he is confusing South and North progress in CPA.
    Thanks

Hamas’ SPLM-DC Trainees are the New Kony tool to be used by NIF against the supporters of New Sudan’s Vision. It will all be handled prpoerly by SPLM with other peaceful political parties.

Acording to the report, they were escorted by khartoum polices that meant, it was organized by Lam Dog Akol and directed by Omar al-bashir. Is that the democracy SPLM-DC was after? Lam Akol should consider come back rather than starting negative and unsuccessful approaches against the SPLM. Man you will die with your party forever.

Lam Akol is a disciple of doom with his SPLM-DC.

All those who want to believe in the SPLM-DC are leading to hell and they will die with out any legacy.

SPLM-DC, a renown disciple of the National Congress Party should not be allowed to disturb students who will do something for our country in future.

Some of us will not remain in power till they die naturally. They have to be replaced by these students.

Lam is like a plant that does not yield. Eventually it dies a death of extinction.

    First reason!
