More power blackouts in Sudan starting Monday
October 11, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s National Electricity Corporation (NEC) announced today that there will be a power outage in the country starting Sunday at midnight.
In a statement the NEC said that “upon a request from the Merowe dam official” all stations feeding from the dam will be disconnected “to fix some technical problems”.
Furthermore, the power authority said that it has contracted “foreign experts who arrived at the scene [Merowe dam]” to review issues facing the electricity generation.
No date has been set for when the power outage will be over but the NEC pledged to minimize the blackout period and resume normal operations as soon as possible.
A week ago, Sudan was hit by a power blackout that lasted for more than eight hours due to failure of feeding units at the Merowe dam.
There has been mounting criticism for the performance of the $2 billion dam which has not lived up to promises made by Sudanese officials of no more power outages.
In the last few weeks the Sudanese Dam Execution Unit traded accusations with the energy ministry over the responsibility for power outages. The former says that the Merowe dam is producing “more than enough” electricity but the energy ministry fought back saying that the dam electricity is “unstable”.
Some observers have contended that Merowe dam was prematurely inaugurated for political reasons a day before the indictment of Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir for war crimes allegedly committed in Darfur.

Where has all the billions from oil money gone?
Corruption have eaten all the billions in revenues use to build the dam, instead they have bought cheap second hand equipments from from Asia now this is the consequences of corruption within the NCP ruling party. Now i believe why some northerners are always complaining their dis-satisfaction with thie NIF regime of NCP and their corruption and oppression of other north sudan tribes like Darfur where we have genocide and khartoum where only the people with connection to the NPC corrupt party will get opportunity.
