N. Bahr el Ghazal plans law on sufficient food production

October 14, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The Government Northern Bahr el Ghazal State today said has started planning a law on sufficient food production across the state.

“We have seriously started registering individual households in areas often affected by low food production such as low land s because of being at the flood plain zones,” said Director General in the ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Beda William Amoi,

Amoi said they started with low lands because the ministry policy would like to encourage local communities along flood plains areas grow crops that require enough water such as rice, he said adding local populations needs to be regularly kept current with modern farming techniques.

Similarly, the government considers encouraging local population inhabiting both middle and high lands to grow crops whose growth goes well with climatic requirements there, he stressed.

“This is what the ministry has currently started to introduce as part of the policy intended to encourage local communities to embark on sufficient food production in the area,” he stressed.

He went further to add that ministry has a plan that considers enacting a law to compel people to grow food. This law, if passed into an act by the assembly, will encourage the ministry produce more bills on sufficient food production with aims of ensuring food security.

The Drafted bills would soon be tabled before council of ministers prior to taking it to state legislative assembly for another debate when crisis is resolved, Amoi adds.

He emphasized that drafted bill requires each household to establish a granary for food storage adding family heads who fail to comply would be liable to prosecution and imprisonment in the start court.

When we speak of prosperity for all, the first thing we consider is the availability of food at household level. Homes without food are insecure and a recipe for thieves, wizards and idlers, “William stressed.

Northern Bahr el Ghazal State used to be a leading area in sufficient food production particularly rice in 80s.However, with war, a lot of things happened including transfer of scheme machineries to northern States.
