Sudan First Vice president Kiir begins visit to Egypt

October 24, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The First Vice President of Sudan and the president of South Sudan Salva Kiir will start on Sunday a two day visit to Egypt, state agency reported.

Kiir will hold talks with Egyptian president Mohamed Hosni Mubarak and Prime Minister Ahmed Nazeef. His delegation includes presidential adviser Mansour Khalid, foreign minister Deng Alor and Joseph Ashwil state minister at the presidency and other officials.

On Saturday, Kiir met with Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and briefed him on his recent tour in South African nations as well as efforts his government is doing to curb violence in the South.

Sudan official news agency (SUNA) also said the two sides discussed progress in implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The semi-official Egyptian Al-Ahram newspaper quoted the spokesperson of Egyptian cabinet Magdi Radi as saying that Nazeef will tackle with Kiir the plans to resume work in the Jonglei canal project.

Radi said that the Jonglei canal project will save 4 billion cubic meters of water from the Nile waters that would be shared equally for use in the development of the South and launching agricultural and energy projects.

Egypt is growing increasingly concerned with growing water shortage relative to demand. The Nile basin countries are lobbying hard to amend water agreements that grant the lion share of the Nile river water to Egypt.

However, Cairo with the backing of Sudan blocked the move. Egyptian officials have long held that the water security is a red line.

The Jonglei Canal, started in 1980, is a hydro-construction project in Upper Nile Province of southern Sudan designed to alter the course of the White Nile as it passes through a swampy area in southern Sudan known as the Sudd.

However the controversial canal project was put to a halt in 1983 following the outbreak of the North-South civil war. Some southerners say that the canal will cause environmental damage as well as displacement.

The newspaper added that Kiir and Nazeef will also discuss opening a branch for Alexandria University in Juba and launching Egypt sponsored development, energy, health and educational projects.

Jonglei Canal is a red line too!
Any thing else can be tempered with, but lives can not be handled carelessly. The thorny issue of Jonglei Canal should not be discussed at any cause, let alone implementing it!No matter how much assistance Egypt is willing to give Southern Sudan in exchange of Jonglei Canal project,no one should dare digging a grain of sand in any part of Southern Sudan in the name of diverting water to Egypt.

After all,if Egypt claims to be technologically capable, then the easy way to get water is through Red Sea.No logic will allow Southern Sudan to turn its own land into a desert in these days of global warming in order to save Egyptians who only became friends when they are in need.

Bilateral relations with Egypt are vital and mostly welcoming, yet Jongoli Canal is not and issue to be re-negotiated at this time, Egypt has to prove good intentions towards Southerners and stop backing the NCP in the North, then and only then, the southerners will be ready to consider Jongoli Canal advantages and hazards to the local resident

Thanks Salva Kiir Mayardit for your effort. We trust you since the struggle of North -South war.
Wish you save journey to Egypt.
By the way, tell to Eygpt that ressuming Jonglei Cannal will be equate to another war. Jonglei canal was part of South -North war and it should be equate to death because its destruction to people of Jonglei and the enviroment;for example in 1984 this cannal killed alot of animals, make area flooded, Masquitoes.
Jonglei canal construction will be war.

Kiir will be mad if he accepts meeting Egyptian leaders to renegogiate the resumption of Jonglei Canal.
Construction of Jonglei Canal is a red line for all Southerners!

It is the only external challenge that unites all Southern and will force to go back to war no matter what amount of money Egyptians will give Southern Sudanese.
By the way we don’t need that bloody Egpytian money because they have been the route of Southern Sudanese marginalization.

To Kiir, play politics but be careful about Jonglei Canal issue because just talking about it will cost you your presidency.
We are fed up with those bloody Arabs!

    Dear readers,

Salva Kiir should be careful and try his level best to be skillful when dealing with these crocodiles, the Egyptians. The issue of Jonglei canal needs careful discussion. The implementation of the CPA is a sensitive area to Egypt and particularly the self-determination clause. Kiir should not change his colours based on which location he finds himself. He should tell what is right as it is. There are other bilateral relations that can be cemented with Egypt without compromising the position on the right to self-determination.

Kiir must not accept Egyptian demand on our property. Indeed, If Jonglei Canal is one to make Egyptian support South Sudan independence. Hell no, let them stay away, we will still got it though they stay back.

Kiir should avoid any word “”Nile water”” from Egyptians mouth. Some time you sign things that you are going to regret about them. One example is (census).

The issue of Jonglei Canal can not be used as political topic. It is always unpalatable to hear it everytime Egyptians bring it up. We, the citizens of Jonglei know how to deal with it eventhough it is being made as a political topic over there. It does not worry us at all if they are just giving it a lip service there in Cairo.
However, as far as I know, its resumption is very glimse!!!

Enjoy your trip over there Mr. President, but making some deals in exchange of Jonglei Canal’s resumption, is something unwelcoming. You (President) should also keep in mind where to pay Egyptians back if anything goes into your government concerning the deal of the Canal, becasue I am pretty sure that canal will never be dug through the heart land of Jonglei.

Further more President, you should also keep in mind the life that will be lost in the course of diversion.

It’s quite wonderful seeing visits that would materialize to developmental projects in South Sudan.Tell Egyptians to stand behind the referendum for any outcome. Also, they got to see not only the trees in South Sudan but, should all look at the fundamental of the forest at large.

However, did I see Jonglei Canal issue..it’s just nice to bring it back to renegotiation. It must be resurrected, and it must be completed since it’s left with only some miles away.
Small brains are too many around, and they would refuse its resurrection.Just interested in telling you that, get down and make more research and you will appreciate its outcome.
Don’t tell us stories in your research that Egypt’s government is still planning to resettle her indigenous communities along the nile to boost its projects.

How I try to see it,it will control the volume of water that purges every year outside the state of Jonglei which ‘s more of importance. We will never have the state developed with flooding that’s just a disaster every each day.Water must find its own level ,should be more under control to facilitate the development through out.

Lastly, resurrection and renegotiation of Jonglei canal must be in such a way as to control the volume of water and promote developmental projects around its territories and make more conservation of the environment.

    Tnxs!!!

    Dear all,

let the red teeth Egyptians know that gone are the days when they fool around and loot our properties. we are in a different era and i don’t think if South Sudanese will make a mistake to let this water thirsty Egyptian nation to resume Jongli canal project. Kiir need to say NO! to this attempt. we in South Sudan don’t need Egyptian’s help if Jongli Canal is the pattern at this point. Egyptians are not clear cuts when it comes to all this messes the whole Sudan is in now. they also need to stop intimidating others countries who are a long the river Nile. Egyptians need to make sure that we are all humans and we bleed the same red fluid which they always like to mentioned in their articles.

    peace out

The Government of Sudan should not violate the right of the communities which have been displaced by Jonglei Canal since its began 1980 , this canal displaced and demolished many houses in the following counties of Jonglei State

Khorfulus County where it started and passed through it, it has divided county in to two parts and demolished many homes/houses in the area , likewise to Ayod County and Dut County. if the government wanted to resume this project then let it compensate the houses which were demolished and consult the communities leaders so that it can be allowed to resume, it is the above mentioned counties which known the impact of this project , but if the government is not going to do that, then it will not be sucessful even if the government will use force on people, we are the owners of this canal especially those of Khorfulus where the Canal emanate, this canal has disadvantages on the communities , let not see the advantages which it will bring to the government and frorget about the hosts communities which were displaced and owners of this land, the government of Sudan must respect the right of local people which own the land .

No, no, no canal, we the people of Southern Sudan will go to war because of the canal therefore contemplate twice about it.

But if you do it without consultation from Jonglei communities & leaders it could be an immense calamity.
