Election and referendum are key issues for peace in Sudan – UN

October 27, 2009 (UNITED NATIONS) — Democratic elections and southern Sudan referendum are the key issues for resolving a long-standing conflict in Sudan, the UN Secretary General said.

Ban Ki-Moon made these remarks in his latest report on the progress of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS). This report is scheduled to be discussed by the Security Council on Wednesday.

“The holding of elections and referendums are among the key milestones of the peace agreement ending the long-running north-south civil war in Sudan that have yet to be reached,” the UN Secretary General said in his 25 pages report.

The UN Mission in Sudan was established in 2005 to monitor the peace agreement between the government in Khartoum and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in southern Sudan, which ended more than two decades of war.

“Next year’s elections, the first multi-party polls in decades, must be seen as part of a larger process of democratic transformation, requiring a long-term commitment by all parties,” he said.

He also said that the apparent targeting of unarmed civilians during the series of tribal attacks and counter-attacks in southern Sudan this year is of grave concern, as are the reports of widespread proliferation of arms in the region.

He calls upon the Government of Southern Sudan to strengthen its efforts to end recurring violence and to bring those responsible to justice.

The Secretary-General concludes by saying that the coming 18 months will pose enormous challenges for the people of the Sudan, and how those challenges are met will largely determine the future of the country.

It is not wise that people are encouraging unity in Sudan while South Sudan sheds tears for separation from terrorist group. The sign of separation has already been indicated by bashir for not implementing the CPA to the hyena government of dinkas, so what else.

    Secretary General,
You are right for only way and solution for long term civil war in the Sudan is just optional for the two key issues election and referendum for this literal conflict in the South Sudan, otherwise it is endless conflict. UN should execute the open heart help for the Southerners to get freedom from internal and border of Northern Sudan conflict by enforcing the security to protect and allow the southerners to prepare for election without hearing the incident dead of innocent children and women. South Sudan should also embrace the election as their only open way for this small tribal clash to stop.

Remember the Greater Equatorians, the founders of the so called South Sudan.Respect them. You would have been not talking like this on yhis website if Joseph Lagu,an Equatorian hero did not start the war with the Arabs because of their injustices towards the the blacks of South Sudan.John Garang learned every thing about Sudan from an Equatorian.Behave well with Equatorians, otherwise the great thinkers can alter anything you think is possible for the so called Sudan.Take care!

    BUSTA2,

You are out of the true point stated by non-Sudanese person who is heartfelt with critical time for sudanese. Your ideologies served no credit on your comment according to my understanding, i could not attempt to say a single word very reckless respond to your comment. This is simple show; how strong you are? In the handling sudanese issues, Dinka tribe is very innocent and innocent in the all field of liberation of Southerners.

    Hello fellow Southerners,

I always read people’s comments complaining of one tribe dominated the GOSS and in fact, there are no true evidences of this claims, can Mr. Oduck Bol tell me 10 Ministers he meant?

the representation of GOSS Ministers was base on regional representation and the former three regions of Southern Sudan were represented equally, each region is being represented by 8 Ministers which is total of 24 cabinet in Juba GOSS level. So Mr. Oduck if you doubt this, count the Ministers on the basis of regional representation not tribes.

if you count tribes, your shallow minded may think that Dinka in Upper Nile may not be represented because they are being represented by the Dinka in Bahr El Ghazal of which it is not excceptable in the equity of power sharing base on regional representation.

i hope you guys can appreciate the report of UN SG Ban Ki-Moon who identified crucial issues in the CPA.

i think you listen Oduck Bol.
