Minnawi’s SLM to be registered after security arrangements – council
October 28, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The council of political parties said waiting that the former rebel group of Minni Minnawi completes the implementation of security arrangement to register it as political party.
The council said today the number of registered political parties in the country has reached 79 ahead of April 2010 elections.
Minni Minnawi had refused in the past to integrate his troops in the Sudanese army as provided in a peace deal he signed with the Sudanese government in May 2006.
Mohamed Bushara Dossa, the chairman if the Council of political parties said today waiting to receive confirmation that the Sudan Liberation Movement of Minni Minnawi has ended the implementation of security arrangements as stipulated in Darfur Peace Agreement.
Minnawi has to integrate his troops in the Sudanese army. However the Presidential Senior Assistant had accused Khartoum of suspending the implementation of the peace deal.
Earlier this week, the former rebels announced in El-Fasher their intention to take part in the next year elections shifting from their initial position to conclude an alliance with a registered party and to call upon SLM-MM supporters would vote for this party.
At the closing ceremony of the meeting of its Revolutionary Liberation Council on October 26 the former rebel group reiterated its readiness to participate in the elections.
Minnawi’s SLM group has been hit by defections and resignation from his commanders and his aides leading observers to believe that he is severely weakened from when he signed the DPA.
