Sudanese opposition alliance says Darfur issue should be resolved in comprehensive process
October 30, 2009 (ASMARA) — The issue of peace in Darfur should be part of a comprehensive process to settle the Sudanese problem, said an opposition umbrella today in the Eritrean capital.
A delegation from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) held talks on Friday with the ruling People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) in Asamar. The meeting tackled ways to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in between the two political forces.
Speaking to the media, Hatim Asir Ali, the NDA spokesperson, stressed that Darfur issue should be part of a comprehensive political process that needs to be resorted to with a view to resolving the Sudanese problem.
He further said that separate agreements between the Sudanese government led by the National Congress Party and the opposition forces in southern Sudan and Darfur have failed to achieve peace in Sudan. Hence, peace process aiming at ending Darfur conflict separately would not be effective, he pointed out.
Alsir also suggested that regional and international efforts should be limited to facilitate and mediate the resolution of the conflict. He also said Eritrea can play a significant role in this regard.
Formed after the June 30, 1989 coup d’Etat, the opposition coalition which had included northern, southern and western Sudan opposition forces, is now gathering mainly some northern Sudan opposition parties. It is led by Mr. Mohamed Osman Al-Mirghani, the chairman of the Democratic Unionist Party.
After the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) the SPLM distanced its self from the NDA and Pagan Amum who is the Secretary General of the Sudanese umbrella didn’t participate in its meetings since 2005.
The opposition alliance signed a peace agreement sponsored by the Egyptian government on June 18, 2005 with the Sudanese government. The agreement is dealing mainly with the democratic transition, but Khartoum failed to implement.
Dr. Mansour Yusuf Al-Ajeb, a member of the NDA leadership, said the non-participation of the NDA in All Parties Conference held in Juba last Month does not mean that it rejects the meeting as such.
The opposition coalition had been based in the Eritrean capital; at the time Eritrean government accused Sudan of supporting Islamist opposition and broke off diplomatic relations with Khartoum.

How can our issue be amalgamated with Darfur issue when the people of Darfur were the holders of Islamic sword against us? To this we have not forgotten. While we can forgive you on that I can assure you we will not forget all that in our time of existence. Reconciliation under two sovereign state flags is the answer. We need nothing from you except our own that is illegally controlled by you. Naivasha protocol is the answer to our issue and nothing else. Please stop confusing us with nosense.
