Halayeb triangle excluded from Sudan voter registration: report
November 1, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – A disputed border area between Sudan and Egypt will not be included in the voters registration process currently underway.
The Al-Sudani newspaper quoted sources saying that Halayeb triangle will be excluded from the process which started today and will last a month ahead of the general election scheduled for April 2010.
Last month, Sudan’s electoral commission took the highly unexpected step and announced that the residents of the Red Sea border area of Halayeb will be allowed to register as voters in the elections.
The board declared that all villages and areas of Halayeb triangle contain Sudanese citizens with constitutional rights under the color of law.
Egyptian officials on background reacted warning that the matter is a “red line” yet affirming that it will not cause any strain in relationship between the two countries.
This week the Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Osman Ismail downplayed the dispute saying that the region should be one of “integration” between the two countries.
“We believe that Halayeb and other [areas] should be solved in this context meaning that there are no borders between the two countries” Ismail told reporters in Cairo.
The remarks contradict those made by Sudanese presidential assistant, Musa Mohammed Ahmed last month who called for the dispute be transferred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Halayeb triangle that overlooks the Red Sea has been a source of tension between the two countries as early as 1958, shortly after Sudan gained independence from British-Egyptian rule.
The border issue was laid to rest until the 1990’s when relations between the two countries worsened over accusations that Sudan is harboring Islamic militant groups seeking to overthrow the Egyptian regime.
A failed attempt on the life of the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was blamed on Khartoum after which Cairo moved to assert control over the area.

Good idea. That was a smart way and right decision from Sudan. Egypt has been seeking opportunity when ever Sudan has many conflict to itself which was created by evils who want to get their stomach full than doing right thing to nation of Sudan. Sudan will solve Egypt problem soon or later. the red line they warning about will be solve in future. I do not know why Sudan has relationship with a country that has no benefit to Sudan. Sudan should make friendship with countries that has technology which may benefit Sudan instead of Egypt.

I am sorry but Northerners you will never get Halaayeb territory back believe me, Egyptians will not leave that place because they know Northern Arabsa re weak and worship them and look up to them as their big master, Egyptian also believe they can defeat northerners with military means.
Northerners do not be afriad or compromise on your own land, Egyptians invadeda nd now occupy a big piece of Sudan land, do not be afriad of them, prepare yourselves to liberate your land by any means be it through peace or through military means.
There more you give Egyptian time to occupy Halaayeb the more they will become more embedded there and northerners now say bye to Halaayed too.

You are right Time1 northerners worship their big masters Egyptians, look at how they deeled with Halayeb triangle issue in 2004 when they withdrew their troops from halayeb without any confrontation and let Egyptian militry take controle of desputed triangle, They gave away halayeb on a golden plate to their masters, Shame on you Ismail,you didn’t do anything when you were foreign minister, what are you going to do now. If eastern sudan parties didn,t ask the govrnment to include halayeb in coming general elections,they wouldn’t have bother to do that.and look at the way they are deeling with Abyei area issue inspite of the Hague tribunal decision,they should let Abyei’s boundary Commission start their work on the ground.
This NCP govrnment is not capable to govrne and protect people of sudan, they cannot even protect the capital khatoum where their gvrnment is. look how Ibrahim Khalil came to khartoum confronted them for days.
SPLA fought those caword for years although they were backed by Chinese and Russian and all arab world including some malitias and LRA but SPLA were still liberating towns and villiges.
