SPLM nudges for inclusion of more Diasporas in voter registration

November 10, 2009 (JUBA) — Leading members of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) push to include more countries inhabited by Southern Sudanese in the Diaspora voter registration process.

The move comes after the publication by the National Election Commission (NEC) of a list of countries mostly in the Golf countries where most the members of the Sudanese Diaspora are from northern Sudan.

The list includes countries Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Sultanate of Oman, Bahrain, the UK, Belgium (for all Western Europe) and Washington, New York, Los Angles for the USA.

Suzan Jambo, SPLM Secretary for external relations, in the southern sector, says voter registration for Diasporas should not be limited to countries in the NEC list. “It has to be extended to other countries hosting number of Sudanese abroad,” she said reiterating inclusion of more countries to the list.

Neighboring countries likeUganda, Kenya Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Congo just to name a few still holds number of people either as refugees or educational purposes, she adds.

Last week, General Oyai Deng Ajak, minister of regional cooperation in the government of Southern Sudan and John Andruga, designated principal liaison officer representing government of Southern Sudan in Kenya echoed similar concerns.

Today, seven SPLM chairpersons in Europe: UK, Benelux region, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland reiterated the same concerns urging for immediate attention to extend registration to more countries abroad.

In a statement seen by Sudan Tribune addressed to Honorable Abel Alier, Chairman, National Election Commission, they requested inclusion for more registration centers in Europe, East Africa, Horn of Africa and Australia.

They urged to involve representatives of the various political parties as observers during the registration process to deter foul play.

The leaders also requested need to extend the period of registration to cater to people who reside far from the registration centers selected as well need for a simple and imaginative registration process that avoids the need for a Sudanese passport for the

They also underlined that, due to current global economic recession, many Sudanese are not able to meet the costs of acquiring a Sudanese passport because majority have lost their job hence.

Most former refugees in Europe and America do not have a Sudanese passport, especially those who were brought from the refugees camps in Africa.

Ha ha this is the only way for corrupt SPLA to persuade more votes. Why don’t you tell your dinkas to leave Equatorians properties so that the approximate number of 1.5m Equatorians in refugee will come to register. Sound like SPLA is suffering on the edge of the hill and chances are falling into the water or survive, people will not show an interest because they don’t know who is the right candidate, the most educated and intelligent people are Riek and Igga nothing else. Where is DINKA AIRWAY, let it go and pick those refugees in those countries, or rent East Africa Airway with millions you always loot into you accounts in UK, USA, Kenay, Uganda, S Africa and etc.

    Dear, Southerners

I absolutely igree with Mr James becuase the Southerners, enemy so call Abel Alier must ridge the election if splm/a is not seriouse and u ve seen the way he has started the work partially, he is auctomatically against south Sudan as he said the sudanese outsiders in the countries bordering South Sudan would not be register b,se he knew they poeple residing in those countries re southerners particularly SPLM members, I urge all the Southerners to entreat to God their grievance such that Pro-Arab Abel Alier could die(depart this life or give up the ghost) before election period.

Southerners would not get chance to rule if Abel Alier still alive on this world.
