Sudanese delegation in Washington to discuss lifting sanctions
November 13, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan is dispatching a delegation to the US in order to discuss the prospects of lifting the decade-long unilateral sanctions imposed, a pro-government newspaper reported today.
Al-Raed, which is owned by the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), said that the delegation is of a “technical nature” but will also include “senior political figures”.
They will meet with members of the US administration and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the newspaper said adding that this is part of the steps agreed on between Khartoum and Washington in the past.
It is not clear from the report what items will be on the agenda. The US president Barack Obama renewed the sanctions imposed on Sudan last month.
The executive order came days after Washington unveiled a new Sudan strategy that contains a mix of pressure and incentives aimed at settling the simmering conflict.
Sudan has been under US sanctions since 1997, and remains on the US list of state sponsors of terror. At the time, the country provided safe haven to Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and others Washington listed as terrorists.
Sudanese officials criticized the move but downplayed its impact and contended that it is hurting the people and not the government.
Despite Khartoum signing a peace deal with the Southern rebel in 2005, another violent conflict erupted in Sudan’s Western region of Darfur putting on hold any US promises made to normalize relations with the East African nation.

These sanctions should remain in place until the criminal regime is removed from power. When the legitimate government takes over power in Khartoum, the world will have all the chances to deal with the Sudanese system.
