Iran, Sudan issue joint communique

TEHRAN, April 18, 2004 (IRNA) — Iran and Sudan on Saturday expressed their firm determination to expand the all-out bilateral relations based on the principles of mutual respect and the internationally-accepted norms and regulations.

Issuing a joint statement following the sixth round of the political committee of the two countries, Iran and Sudan voiced indignation over the claims by some in the world who link violence, terrorism and dictatorship to the Muslim World.

The communique was inked by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for the Arab and African Affairs Mohammad Sadr and Sudanese State Minister for the Foreign Affairs Najib al-Khayr Abd-al-Wahhab.

The communique said the public and private companies of Iran and Sudan remain committed to get involved in the development projects in both states and would try their utmost in this regard.

Iran has welcomed the peace talks going on in Sudan and pressed hope that full peace and stability would be restored to the African country in virtue of the unity and solidarity among he Sudanese people.

The Sudanese side stressed the right of the Islamic Republic to use the nuclear energy for the peaceful purposes and condemned the biased policies of some world powers in this connection.

Iran and Sudan pledged also to work together to bring closer their attitudes on the major global issues and those in the Muslim World including the Palestinian crisis, Zionist terrorism and the need for efforts to help restore peace and security to Iraq and the withdrawal of the occupying forces from the Middle Eastern country.

The sides also pledged to continue consultations to play an active role on the international stage as for the fight against terrorism, disarmament and the environmental issues.

Measures should also be taken by the Islamic states to prevent

the Western countries from taking advantage of the human rights implications and use it as an instrument against the Islamic states, the sides confirmed.

The issuance of the joint statement followed a visit to Sudan in March by the Iranian Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari.

He also submitted a message from President Mohammad Khatami to his Sudanese counterpart Umar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir who expressed his satisfaction with the message.

The Sudanese president denounced the double-standard policy of big powers towards use of nuclear energy, adding “Iran is entitled to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.”

Al-Bashir stressed that the Sudanese people are looking forward to a visit of Mr Khatami to their country.
