Lam Akol nominated for southern Sudan presidency

By Ngor Arol Garang

November 19, 2009 (MAKALA) —Leaders from eight Southern political parties today said have unanimously nominated Dr. Lam Akol, the leader of SPLM-DC, as presidential candidate against SPLM candidate General Salva Kiir Mayardit for position of the Government of Southern Sudan president in the upcoming election.

Lam_Akol_AU1.jpgThe announcement follows a just concluded three days South-South dialogue conference held in Khartoum that establishes an alliance named as Southern Sudan Political Parties Alliance.

The members of the new SSPPA are: SANU, UDSF, United Democratic Party, SPLM-DC, Sudan National Labor Party, USAP-2, South Sudan Democratic Forum, South-Sudan Democratic Front.

SPLM-DC Secretary General Eng. Charles B. Kisanga, applauded the decision taken by the eight southern political parties to pick his party chairperson as candidate for the Southern Sudan presidency.

“I appreciate their decision and interest to relieve the regional government from collapsing, he said adding his nomination was one of the resolutions passed by south –South Sudan dialogue conference held recently.”

He further said they agreed that all southern political parties participate in the coming election by declaring their intentions to run for all positions including presidency, parliaments, gubernatorial and county commissioner positions.

In a statement to Sudan Tribune, Dr. Lam Akol on Thursday denounced SPLM intention to deny southern Sudan citizens self determination awareness saying majority do not know the real meaning of it.

“If you ask an ordinary citizen from South Sudan about self determination, the citizen will definitely have difficulties in giving exact answer to your question, because they have not properly educated and prepared,” he said.

He continued to say that SPLM leadership are only engaged in political cants and conspiracy against the peace which they claimed to be working for its implementation while “thousands of innocent civilians dies almost every day at their watch.”

“How you claim to be working for implementation of an agreement while citizens continues to kill themselves in addition to lack of service delivery and rampant of corruption scandal allegations among leaders serving regional government,” he posed.

He also affirmed that the alliance will study the options for the upcoming elections refuting the allegations that there are parties behind the establishment of their association.

The SPLM accused its peace partner the National Congress Party of supporting the newly formed alliance to weaken its influence and support in southern Sudan.

He further accused SPLM creator current sour relationship between north and south Sudan. He also continued to on the regional government to hinder constitutional rights that allow freedom of political activities in the region while applying law against violators for those who violates constitution as supreme law of the land.

Sudan will witness next April its first free and fair general election for the Sudanese presidency, southern Sudan government Presidency, states governors, federal and southern Sudan parliaments and states assemblies.

However western countries push for an agreement between the two partners to run only for Sudanese GOOS presidencies. While the opposition parties and the SPLM also agreed last month to boycott the elections if the dominant party does not pass a series of law to remove restrictions imposed on political freedoms.

Oh My God, GOSS/GHOSTS are in the verge of being confused once again. Look how the natorious NEC by Abel Alier and Bashir will cook the results. They will say Southern majorities in the North and millions more in diaspora such as Egypt, Saudia Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Libya have all voted for the Southern Opposition Alliance and possibly declare Lam Akol as the winner of Southern presidency.

    What need to be done…??

IT’s so simple the elections are already stolen as confessed by Bona Malual, the Goss need not to waste time there but must immediately declare South Sudan as an independent state. They still have an overwelming from all Southerners! The Goss must be very stupid to allow itself be marched into an already designed and stolen ballots but to declare South Now in order to deny those crooks an international propaganda of questionable demoracy

And remember that for such a simple People like Lam and Machar, who like themselves to be come leaders will not and can be supported at all.

    Oh my God!

Am I dreaming or reading News on Sudantribune then?My dear leaders in the South, stitch in time save nine.I am totally confused for what to say but what I know so far,Lam Akol will not make it.If he does, then he will turn deaf ears to our problems in the South unless we are going to use any other means which will not be favourable to Us.

It would be better for Southerners to nominate a young politician among the youth to stand for presidency if the big fishes/fishs fear to do so.Anyway,it is very difficult to know somebody’s plan when you have not stayed with.

    Hello Guys,

Laughingly, the failure of Dr. Lam Akol or loosing the seat of GOSS Presidency is showing itself clearly on this web site comments. if you could judge now base on commently support of Lam Akol, few among those who back up Lam are minority and majority show support of the mother wing or [people party] SPLM. so definitely Dr. Lam Akol will experience a humiliation defeat in the next year April 2010 elections, let ‘s wait and see the dam Lam, he will never and never rule South at all for the rest of his life. dam fools Lam Akol!!!!

    Hi guys

It appears that Kiir popularity seem to fade off every single day. That is because the wars that SPLA had with different tribes, the corruption of the SPLM in Southern Sudan, the hatred between Dinka and other ethnic groups cause all these harms.

The only way for SPLA to rescue itself is to let someone with a new face and from different tribe rather than Dinka to take the lead because the objective of SPLA/M was not to serve one tribe but every Southerner. Kiir need to relinguish leadership to Dr. Riek for SPLM survival.

That is true analysis some gang should not take on tribal borders.

Also I want to ask those who cursed Lam to stop their stupid comments because Lam is also southerner like Kiir and late Garang and one should not curse him simply because he want to take leadership from ones tribe men.

Please try to remember that southern Sudan belong to all of us include Lam Akol therefore by law he has right to contest any election like anyone else, and if he fail it will be have to him and his supporters to suffer that.

    I hope you got that.

    God bless

Let’s see whether he will even come to the South. He has been holed up in Khartoum since his second betrayal of Southern unity.

Which Party is he representing then?I know very well that we don,t belong to his pasted and copied party from mother SPLA/M. Don’t tell me that he is representing Our people’s party because he doesn’t belong to SPLA/M.

Anyway, it is good to send a thief to catch a thief. But is he going to make it really? For me I doubt him and I will.

    Mr. Critic Ngueny

The true is coming to it’s real feet, anyway, why do you have to worry about who is going to vote for Dr. Lam, I think it is better to worry for who is going to vote for Mr. Salva Kiir since everyone normally worries about his own candidate rather than the candidate of the other party. Why do you cares if he fail and Kiir win? Please mind your own business negro.

Remember also that Lam is surrounded by all those tiny neglected tribes and therefore he will lose while Kiir from the biggest tribe of Dinka will automatically win both Sudan presidency and the presidency in South Sudan so that people like J, James got to come under Dinka knees as you put it two days ago.

Critic Ngueny, please don’t panic surprise yet unless you remembered the truth within the hearts of SOutherners and if you do, then that is the beginning and it will get worse and worse on your side instead of our side negro.

Bro, if you want to talk about war we need it, democracy, we welcome it, free and fair election, we love it, arrogancy, we have it. All in all, the all tribes in South Sudan are in good update about you and your crooks. Thank God for getting us to 2009/2010.

    Wow!

Dr. Lam Akol’s strategy has outwitted the incompetent SPLM leadership. While the SPLM leaders are busy sabbotaging themselves in internal conspiracies against comrades, Dr. Akol on the other hand is busy organizing the Southern political parties under one umbrella.

It is now clear that Dr. Akol will be the next President of South Sudan. Eight political parties are now fully behind him and the NCP will help in rigging the South Sudan Presidential elections in his favor.

The SPLM is still whinning without declaring its candidates for Sudan and South Sudan. Will the incompetent and corrupt Kiir stand against Dr. Lam Akol in the South? Dr. Lam will past the elections by 80% votes that will be declared by the NCP’s Abel Alier. Ahaahahahahaaaaa……….

What a shock to Southern Sudanese. Lam Akol running for presidential candidate against SPLM? What a mess and confusion that he will bring to southerners. Saying that he is educated enough to bring change, what change he could bring, while he support tribal fight among tribes. Though SPLA/M lack services delivery they are working on the basic need till the acomplish services that are lacking. A primitive professor who kill civillians could not be allow to govern/rule South Sudan, so voters don’t give him a single chance and beware that all shilluk are supporting him except Pagan Amum and Oyai Deng Ajak family/relative. and bear in mind that this man may win because NCP is behind him and election fraud is likely to happen. I don’t really see this so called Lam Akol as a threat or rival to SPLM or Salva or whosoever will stand to represent the South in the SPLM. SPLM-DC is a baseless party and cannot withstand SPLM that spend 21 years in the bush fighting for the freedom and peace in this region. I can simply describe this SPLM-DC as escorting SPLM to an up right victory.

You know, when the going get tough, we keep going and that’s SPLM in action.

Dr Lam akol has the constitional right to vie for the southern sudan presidency a right that we all have a southern sudanese, criticizing his candidature tothe extend of calling him a trator or pupy being use by the arab in the north constitute fear for peacefull and democratic contry, multi partism always startn that way, Khartoum govermnet should not longer be termed as enemy reather as a parner in nation buildning, remember our own southern sudan president is the first vice poresident in the republic of sudan, if khartoum goverment become to day source of enemies then Kir is a part of that. I completely desagree with political arguement that is base on the old ideology, any southern sudanese has a right to form a party and run it weather he is doing it in the north or the south, remember sudan is not yet divided yet.

He has the full right under the constitution to nominate himself for the presidency, we are not a one party dictatoship country. lets wait and see how the elections go, we have to let other southerners voice their concerns otherwise we are pushing ourself into a dark corner which will have no democracy and will tarnish our image as freedom fighters and naturally democratic people, also remember southsudan has many party’s, so let as give Dr Lam and other parties to practise their political freedom as long as they do not do any harm to anyone in south sudan that is very welcome, also things are generally not very smooth right now, samson just escaped an assasination last week as a result of insecurity and poor security system in the region brough by lack of good governance.

back in history in 1991 Lam Akol went together with Dr Riek Machar and form southern sudan independent movement SSIM

    Salva Kiir’s vomited wisdom,

I know some of you are ashamed to read the Famous Rumbek Meeting of 2004 that exposed John Garang as incompetent and a traitor of the South. That was a vote of no confidence on him. A blind man running can fall into a bottomless pit. A deaf who doesn’t hear can fall into a trap!

Read this beautiful warning of Salva Kiir to John Garang in Rumbek, 2004, during their quarrel which was peacefully mediated by Dr. Riek Machar. Read carefully the marked words in the quotations:

“Those who are misleading you (Garang) and giving you false security information about others will ’suffer’ with you together or ’leave’ with you. The government, which is going to be led by you must include all. Without unity, the agreement will be a source of our disunity. We are ’not’ organized in all aspects, and as such will be exploited by other political parties that are more organized. The ’lack’ in our structures and political guidance will lead us to a ’very serious’ political defeat.”

Salva Kiir showed wisdom of what to happen in the future if Garang did not change. Did Garang listen to the warning? No he didn’t. But is Salva Kiir not repeating the things he warned against. Has he organized the party now so that other political parties do not exploit the situation SPLM is in? No, he hasn’t. I also warn you the disciples not run blindly until you fall into the bottomless pit. Change or the sweeping change will change you!

I am very Amusing for decision that nomination of Dr. Lam Akol as candidate for southern political party to challenge SPLM party lead Gen.Dr. Salva Kiir Mayardit in forthcoming election.

Are we really working for self benefit or to liberate southerners and other marginalise regions in the country. Nomination of Dr.Lam AKol is good but it could not be at this juncture otherwise southerners may lead somewhere else then in sudan.

As per now, what ind of leadership can Dr.Akol do in sudan since He is just a political commentator in the country,.

Those southern politcal parrties who nominate him are soooooooooo foolish indeed. How come for you to just do such kind of primtiveness and backwardness in the country.

Are you not aware that war northern sudan is prepared for in south sudan, and you just delusing southerner with your parties.

What have political parties in southern sudan to southerners then Sudan people’s liberation movement party,

Leaving rest of political parties but the illegitimate party that so-caled sudan people’s liberation movement for democracy change, what are we changing? who is now with the democracy? is with southerners or northerners.

Dear Fellow leaders in sudan, we should be reasoning for what will be happening in future than what we are now.
we should think bigger in vacuum of reasoning.

Whether SANU, UDF or other political party that are eligible to participate in election should first see where are we head to now before casting their vote.

Lam Akol is just a dead body waiting for coffins in sudan.
there is no [political party that him never serve in the sudan, How greedy could our leader Dr. Lam Akol if he won election in sudan.

    Dear Sudanese,
We need to be very cautious on this ill decision of Lam Akol being nominated for Southern Sudan Presidency for 2010. Now note that the already hiden weapon of mass destruction has been found again in Sudan. Therefore, if it’s not destroy now before posing a potential threat to the entire population of the whole Sudan and that could be a difficult task to do soon or later. However, I call it another new war on Somalia, Afaghanistan and Iraq. It’s the most dirtiest political war of the time ever played. This is a key architect designed to fail the SPLM but, it ‘ll never work that way! I’m sure some of the leaders within SPLM are behind this plan. There is no diffrent between Lam and Arabs,Black Arabs or bought Arabs only the dead ones are better. Lam only went to school to do anything that ‘ll destroy SPLM but, not to become a leader. By way the you can learn more examples from his books and articles that he wrote. Lam’s history ‘ll be like of Iddi Amin. The fall of an elephant is the beginning of hunter’s smile and stomach enlargement.
Sudan civil war caused millions of lives and those people ‘ll be on the person who ‘ll take us back to war again.

I have realised, many people are outside Southern sudan and would take no part in any election,so your abuse wont count.Let us stop roaring from Australia,US etc but get to the ground in Southern Sudan then contribute in one way or another,is Lam Akol not a Southern Sudanese free to play his role?If you are not happy with him or his party, just give your reason why but not just abuse. That is what we call democracy we all want, freedom to pick who we want.

Lam Akol nominated for southern Sudan presidency
    Dear readers,

It is now very clear to any sound minded person that Dr. Lam Akol is like a sharp thorn in the ass of the SPLM in the South. By winning the political consensus with all the eight political parties in the South, Dr. Lam has proven that he is a smarter strategist and far more intelligent than 90% of the SPLM leadership. He has outwitted the party leadership!

Now this leaves the SPLM with few painful choices to avoid being embarrassingly defeated in the coming elections by Dr. Lam Akol.

1/ To boycott the elections all together. This will however have its consequences; resulting to boycott of the referendum and anger by Southerners who have been patiently waiting for elections to remove this incompetent leadership.

2/ The SPLM will conduct and fail elections but will refuse to handover power to Dr. Lam Akol. This will cause outrage in the South and possible internal civil war. The international community will condemn the SPLM for violating the democratic transformation by refusing to handover power to the elected leader. NCP will side with the world to remove the illegal SPLM leadership after elections defeat.

3/ Or SPLM has to nominate a competent leader that can really face Dr. Lam Akol and other eight political parties. This should be someone who can difuse the alliance Dr. Lam Akol has established and win back to SPLM alliance some if not all of these political parties. Salva Kiir’s nomination for South Sudan presidency may make things even worse then they currently stand.

Guys, you can dismiss this political development but it is real! NCP has already in advance declared Dr. Lam Akol as the next President of the South. Believe me, in this confused state of affairs within the SPLM party, Dr. Lam will rise victorious! SPLM has no political guidance as we write and failed to make timely and wise nominations. And it has lost the eight political parties already to Dr. Lam Akol. Pathetic!

I generally think this is a wrong choice by the South Sudan political parties. I am not picking on Dr. Lam but no one can rule people he doesn’t mingle with because he definitely doesn’t understand their problems and him being based in Khartoum doesn’t make him the much needed president of the people of the South.

We should stop thinking with confinement to the past but be realistic about what will for sure improve the country we all love.

In my opinion, Dr Riek is the right person to lead southern sudan out of this nightmares. Don’t judge yet, read on…
Why I think this would be the case is that, given that Riek was at the verge of destroying the south in 1991, as a human being, he is under pressure to reciprocate what he did and will always try to do right things to the southerners and that is why Dr. Garang accepted him back, he knew he would be an asset in his wake (absence). Secondly, Riek went to Khartoum when he felt out with the SPLA and didn’t like it there as he felt the heat so he rushed back, there is no incentive for him to collaborate with the North again because he definitely has grudges with them. Thirdly, this will bring unity to the South in general, the Dinka being the majority will have a say in how the country is run so it should not be a problem to them, the Nuer will not have any more hatred for the Dinka since the president comes from their tribe and the Equatorians will withdraw their hatred for the Dinka and they will create one for the Nuer only if Riek turns out to be a bad one but Riek knows this so he should be fair to everyone.

So I think Southern Sudanese should stop thinking a bout tribal prestiges but start thinking towards the betterment of everyone in the South.
Unity and peace in the South will be achieved by first getting united against the biggest enemy we know, this will happen only if each and every tribe gives up at least some pride, compromise is the key to stability.

Let’s not just bark at each other on this web but think!

You can write 50 pages or more if you want but the truth remain firm. Continue to insult every tribe in SouthSudan, put everyone who is non-Dinka down all you want but as I said, the bad new is that Southerners had already made their minds, they clearly concluded that the time for Dinka leadership is expired or coming to an end and I don’t know what are you going to do? Precisely, there is nothing you are going to do about it bro.

For your information though, the only Dinka who will get leadership in the future are those whom you don’t like like Bona Malual and journalist Nhial Bol if he want to enter politics, because these guys are God choosen people who don’t like Dinkas to mistreat their own brother and that is the reason why many of you hate them, but they will eventually secure credit from other Southerners.

To answer you about your claim about Murle, yes Murle had and have very good politicians but most of them diet during the war some of them are there watching your drama before they act. In other hand, Dinka had never had good politicians too, because for you to call somebody politician he must be a person who tries to unit country not a thief who want everything to go to his own village or tribemen as Kiir does. The pigs like Kiir and the rest are therefore far away from claiming the status of politcs because the word politicican don’t match with their bending leadership, so Murle that had never had greedy politicians is comparatively much more better than you who have already placed your political credits in toilets.

Lastly, if you think that southerners will still forgive you as they did last 25 years ago, please just keep the copy of that note of yours above for us to revise it 2011.

I hope you enjoy our conversation. Jooonkooothhhhh!!!!!! can’t rule people.

    God bless

    Dear readers,

Please don’t mistake me for being a Dr. Lam’s supporter. I am not his supporter but based on the facts of the current situation, I have to analyse it as per my own opinion.

Yes, you’re right brother Gatwech. If we cannot strengthen our mechanism for mobilizing our people to register for referendum, there will be no SOUTH SUDAN. The current election voter registration shows that SPLM/A is so weak and unable to mobilize people. It is a fact. They cannot even achieve a 20% turnout.

Southerners are so divided and tribalism is dominant. This is because SPLM/A leaders wasted no time to work for their own political and material benefits. Nothing serious has been done for the SOUTH. Even the money spent on purchasing arms is not for the benefit of the normal Southerner. No one need any more wars and bloodshed. SPLM must have used the money to build human resources and train our people in various fields of government administration. It must have been used for development.

The war mentality, corruption and tribalism failed the realization of the CPA. No one will go to war again to have our South Sudan. There is no need for war. Enough is enough. Even the world is not in a position to support any fresh struggle. SPLM/A set a bad example for ruling the South. They have to undergo a painful “mutation” to save the South. They must provide the opportunity for ALL to take part. Corruption and human right abuse has to be stopped once and for all. No one tribe should dominate the political and administrative arenas.

We must all work together to mobilize our people to register for referendum. SPLM/A dictatorship will never succeed to achieve 55% turnout or more. That is why Mr. president and his crew are trying to reduce that percentage (reflecting and admitting their weakness and unpopularity). They have to change and get everybody involved. They need to make the resources available (even from the secret bank accounts) so the referendum is won. We don’t want the history to record that the SPLM/A have failed the hopes and cause of Southerners.

Everyone is needed. I am repeating this many times so it can be understood. Believe me 55% is VERY BIG TURNOUT (if NCP agrees to it). It needs a lot of efforts, resources and manpower. We cannot have a South Sudan with the current realities. We cannot cry later and ask the economically troubled and ailing world to help us to trigger a war. Our neighbor have enough and they have their own nightmares.

Listen SPLM/A, no one is trying to through you to the sea. But you‘ve got to change. You need all Southerners. You’ve got to be for ALL not for a specific ethnic group or narrow materialistic interests..

    O ye Southerners Unite!

    Sincerely yours,

Hi J Nyoma & Panda Oyee,

Mind your words and respect others so that you are respected.Southern Sudan is for all southerners.

I think it is better to waite the results of elections, if it will take place at all, because it is the people of southern sudan who will decide the results and fate of those who will rule south but not through abuses, calling names, harsh and disrespectful language we use in this website. You people speak as if you have been mandated by the public.

SPLM, as a party is not for all southerners if their policies are not attractive. The Any-nya movement heroes were not so hostile like what I am witnessing now with this failed SPLM. The policies of SPLM have failed us and have humilated us in the eyes of the people of the nations.

We have not liberated ourselves yet because our fate is still in the hands of others. We should think of better way to rule ourselves to prove to the world that we are capable people to have our own country.

It is not easy as some people think because we must be able to formulate concrete apparatus of good governance and rule of law which we desperately need in the south today.

God bless southern sudanese and keep them in peace.

    Hi Angelo & others,

All those who committed crimes of humanity must face justice and courts hearings but now they are innocent untill proven quilty.

I believe that most of the SPLA commanders & soldiers have committed crimes of some kinds in the bush and the problem is how to prove their criminality. If we become selective,we create another problem. Many innocent love ones died in the hands of our own comarades. These things are difficult to prove.A good example is that you can be gunned down today in one of the southern sudan towns and nobody is identified as a killer. You see how difficult it is when the rule of law is not in place. The same was happening in the bush by then. How do you judge and convict a criminal when you do not have a prove?

I suggest that we adopt South Africa and Rwanda style of reconciliations and move on.We have alot to do for southern sudan than just dwelling on matters we can not prove.

I read many comments about 1991 but not about innocent people who were intentionally eliminated because they have different ideas or are from another tribe. All these happened under the watch of our SPLM/SPLA leaders, faithful commanders & soldiers and the same is still happening today in all states, towns and payams in the south. All have done this or that, therefore, we have to be aritculate and think of future instead of thinking of past.

Lets establish good system of respecting the rule of law and apparatus of good governance. We need good leaders to take us there and I do believe that there are good leaders out there if chance is given to them and I do believe that southern sudan will be a better place to live in under their leadership.Lets us be openned to ourselves if we want to live in peace, develop and progress.

All can do destruction to ourselves. There is nobody stronger than the other. We only need peace, good dialogue and good communication of good ideas not bad ones.

    God bless all.

Nomination of Dr.Lam Akol for position of GOSS president in 2010 Election by 8 Southern Sudan Political parties is a symbol of Democracy in the Southern SUDAN,which shows that all southerners will be behine Lam Akol and if he mess up he will be remove by means of Vote.

BUT:Dictator Salva Kiir, tells Southern Sudanese who nominated you for the candidacy of GOSS persident ? Are you nominated by the Dika ? The time for appointment has passed with its all nature of Dictatorship,Corruptions and Discriminations. We are in the process of Democracy. Just finish the remaining period and give chance to Dr.Lam Akol to rescue Southern Sudanese. We needs a southern Sudanese who will be the President for South, But NOt Not the president for Dinka.Remember we fought together But it is only Dika Dominating all Ministries even at state leve.

I Call upon all Youths, women and men of southern Sudan to vote a person who will be for all southerners But not for Dika alone.
